  4. ELEMENTARY PRINCIPLES Repentance What? • Repentance is not: • Guilt alone • Feel bad you got drunk • Sorry that you cursed your wife • Cry because you fornicated

  5. ELEMENTARY PRINCIPLES Repentance What? • Repentance is not: • Change of behavior alone • Stop drinking after latest DUI • Stop cursing because wife gets angry • Stop fornicating for fear of disease

  6. ELEMENTARY PRINCIPLES Repentance What? • Strictly defined: • “to change one’s mind” (Thayer) • God “repented” of destruction of Nineveh, Jonah 3:9, 10

  7. ELEMENTARY PRINCIPLES Repentance What? • More than just a change of mind • Guilt over sin, 2 Cor. 7:9, 10 • Change of behavior, Acts 26:20; Mt. 3:8 • Process • Conviction of sin • Change of mind • Change of behavior

  8. ELEMENTARY PRINCIPLES Repentance When? • When convicted of sin, Lk. 17:3, 4 • As often as needed • Impenitence leads to hardness of heart, 1 Tim. 4:1, 2

  9. ELEMENTARY PRINCIPLES Repentance When? • When you decide to become a Christian, Acts 2:38; 3:19 • Immorality, Gal. 5:19-21 • False religion, Mt. 15:7-9

  10. ELEMENTARY PRINCIPLES Repentance When? • When as a Christian you realize • you are in sin, Acts 8:18-24 • Heart poisoned • Pray for forgiveness, 1 Jn. 1:8, 9 • Confess, Jas. 5:16

  11. ELEMENTARY PRINCIPLES Repentance Why? • The goodness of God, Rom. 2:4 • Blessings • Promises, Rom. 2:7, 10

  12. ELEMENTARY PRINCIPLES Repentance Why? • No repentance = torment, Rom. 2:5-9 • Separation from God • Join devil & his angels, Mt. 25:41 • Suffer in flame, Rev. 21:8
