  1. Food and Drug Administration • Started under Teddy Roosevelt in 1906 after muckraker Upton Sinclair published his book, The Jungle. Which exposed the working conditions in the Chicago meat packing industry.

  2. The FDA in Today’s World Information was taken straight from the FDA’s “Food Defect Action Levels" . This is what is allowable but may not be in all foods. READ WITH CAUTION!

  3. Asparagus • ASPARAGUS, CANNED OR FROZEN • Insect filth- • 10% of spears are infested with 6 or more attached asparagus beetle eggs and/or sacs • Insects- • Insects found (whole or equivalent) are 7mm or longer per 100 grams of asparagus

  4. Berries • Drupelet, Canned and Frozen (blackberries, raspberries, etc.) • Mold- Average mold count is 60% or more • Insects and larvae- Average of 4 or more larvae per 500 grams • Average of 10 or more whole insects or equivalent per 500 grams

  5. Cherries • CHERRIES - Fresh, Canned, or Frozen (Brined and Maraschino) • Insect filth- Average of 5% or more pieces are rejects due to maggots • Rot- Average of 7% or more pieces are rejects due to rot • Insect filth- • Average of 4% or more pieces are rejects due to insects other than maggots

  6. Chocolate • CHOCOLATE AND CHOCOLATE LIQUOR • Insect filth- • Any 1 sub sample contains 90 or more insect fragments • Rodent filth-Average is 1 or more rodent hairs per 100 grams in 6 100-gram sub samples examined

  7. Macaroni • MACARONI AND NOODLE PRODUCTS • Insect filth- -Average of 225 insect fragments or more per 225 grams in 6 or more sub samples • Rodent filth- • Average of 4.5 rodent hairs or more per 225 grams in 6 or more sub samples

  8. Olives • Pitted olives • Pits: Average of 1.3 percent or more by count of olives with whole pits and/or pit fragments 2 mm or longer measured in the longest dimension • SIGNIFICANCE: Mouth/tooth injury • Imported Green olives • Insect damage:7% or more olives by count showing damage by olive fruit fly

  9. Rodent filth: 1 or more rodent pellets are found in 1 or more subsamples, and 1 or more rodent hairs are found in 2 or more other subsamples 2 or more rodent hairs per pound and rodent hair is found in 50% or more of the subsamples 20% or more gnawed grains per pound Popcorn

  10. Fish • Red Fish and Ocean Perch • Parasites (copepods) • 3 % of the fillets examined contain 1 or more copepods accompanied by pus pockets

  11. Peanut Butter • PEANUT BUTTER: • Insect filth- Average of 30 or more insect fragments per 100 grams • Rodent filth: Average of 1 or more rodent hairs per 100 grams • Gritty taste and water insoluble inorganic residue is more than 25 mg per 100 grams
