What are friendly letters?

  • Friendly letters are personal letters written to friends or relatives, people close to you.


Features of Friendly Letters

  • The subject matter should be personal.

  • The voice or tone is informal and conversational

  • The heading and the paragraphs are all indented.


Parts of a Friendly Letter


The Heading

  • Goes in the upper right corner

  • Usually takes three lines:

    • the writer’s street address

    • the writer’s city, state and zip code

    • the date the letter was written

The Salutation

  • Another word for saying hello to the person you are writing to

  • Starts on the left side of the page

  • Skip one line below the heading

  • Begins with a capital letter

  • Followed by a comma


Salutation Examples

Dear John, Dear Step-Monster,

Dear Mrs. Hough, Wat up yo,

Dearest love, Dearest sweet-thang,

My homie,


The Body

  • Contains the thoughts and ideas you want to share

  • Skip one line after the salutation

  • Indent the first line of each paragraph


The Closing

  • A way of saying good-bye

  • Needs to line up with the heading on the right side of the page

  • Skip one line below the body

  • Capitalize the first word

  • Follow the closing with a comma


Examples of a closing

  • Love,

  • Sincerely,

  • See ya,

  • You’re so freaking hott,

  • Your friend,

  • Respectfully,


Signature

  • The final part of a friendly letter

  • Skip one line after the closing

  • Line up with the closing and the heading

  • Your first name is usually enough (or your nick name works)


You’re going to write a special kind of Friendly Letter: a LOVE LETTER!

  • To anyone or anything (a real

    person, a celebrity, a food, spring break, Mom, your Blankie, whatever)

  • Body of letter must be at least 8 sentences long

  • Must be school appropriate—don’t use the word ‘sexy’
