Achievement Summary You will be expected to; • describe stage production lighting; • develop a lighting design concept for stage production; • operate lighting for stage production consistent with the design concept.
Task 1 Preparation • As a class we will explore various drama techniques and how they may used. We will also look at various ways of presenting Shakespeare and the nature of Shakespearian text. • The teacher will explain and discuss the selected scenes based on the theme Crimes and Misdemeanours. Your teacher will introduce you to the selected scenes based on the theme ‘Crimes and Misdemeanours” and you will be given an opportunity perform a lighting role. This might apply to the entire production or to a specific scene. • Your teacher will spend time going over the requirements of the role with you. • For example lighting design and operation may be undertaken by one person, or may involve a team working on a scene each and co-operating on the overall design. To achieve excellence you need to develop and sustain an accomplished role. Make sure that you are clear exactly what your role entails, write your job description into your portfolio and check it with your teacher.
Lighting Designer/Operator • The role of the lighting designer within theatre is to work with the director, set designer, costume designer, and sometimes the sound designer and choreographer to create an overall 'look' for the show in response to the text, while keeping in mind issues of visibility, safety and cost. • The Lighting Board Operator is the technician in charge of operating all lighting equipment for a performance, with the possible exception of the spotlights/follow spots, which are usually handled by one or more designated spotlight operators.
Task 2 Planning • Discuss with each group how their individual scenes will fit into this overall framework from a technical point of view. Whether your responsibility is for a single scene or for the full production, you will need to schedule regular meetings with the full production team to ensure that consistent decisions are being made. Make note of the overall framework, the transitions between scenes and your own individual technical plan. • Discuss with your director the overall framework of the production and how your scene will fit into this framework. . Record this framework in your portfolio. • Do two different design concepts for the lighting and present the final one to the director. • Your teacher will discuss with you the resources available in terms of budget, space, and technologies (lights, costumes etc). Draw up a production schedule as a full production team, and with the help of your teacher. You will also need to keep an annotated script with cues/prop requirements etc. • This needs to include:- agreed times for production meetings; dead-lines for research and sourcing of ideas, and for collection and construction of resources; rigging of technologies; technical rehearsals; dress rehearsals; performances; pack-out.

Task 3 Technical Rehearsal • Dress Rehearsal • -before this rehearsal you should have completed all tasks relevant to your role (for eg lighting rigged, patched and focused) • willingness to listen to the director and adapt plan if required • an annotated script should contain relevant technical/production information, for eg lighting cues
Task 4 Performance • carry out your production role to realise the design plan and production concept • sustain your role for the duration of the performance season • maintain your resources (for example repairs to costumes, or replacement of lighting lamps) • support the production framework
Lighting Reflection (Provides evidence for Task 1) Complete a written reflection of the process of lighting this recent production. Please be as detailed as possible and be sure to include answers to the following points: • Describe the various lights fixtures used in the production • Describe the challenges of lighting the scene and any changes you had to make to your original ideas and why? • E.g. difficulty lighting small areas of the AV room due to light spilling into other areas. • Describe the choices you made in the lighting design to help support the ideas/themes in the scene. • E.g. using low level lighting to create a sense of danger or menace • Discuss how you worked with the director and/or stage manager to solve problems or combine ideas. • Reflect on how successful you felt the lighting was for the production, particular successes, any changes you would make now or points to remember for future projects.
