  1. AIM: What are the phases of matter? OBJECTIVES Identify the three basic phases of matter

  2. AIM: What are the phases of matter? Vocabulary Vocabulary: Solid, liquid, gas,

  3. What are the 4 properties of matter? • Mass, volume, weight and density • What are the 3 primary phases of matter? • Solid, liquid, gas • What is the fourth phase? • Plasma?

  4. What is a solid? • Definition: • has definite shape and volume • Name some examples of solids! AIM: What are the phases of matter?

  5. What is a liquid? • Definition: • has definite volume, but not shape • takes the shape of its container • Name some examples of liquids! AIM: What are the phases of matter?

  6. What is a liquid? • Teacher Demonstration: • Make an observation of how this liquid changes shape • Why does this liquid change shape • What causes this liquid to change shape? AIM: What are the phases of matter?

  7. What is a gas? • Definition: A gas has NEITHER definite volume, nor definite shape. Its volume depends on its container, ifit has one AND if the container is closed! • Example: What happen to the helium in a balloon after it bursts? • Name some examples of gases!

  8. What is solid water made up of? Molecules of Hydrogen & Oxygen What is liquid water made up of? Molecules of Hydrogen & Oxygen What is water gas made up of? Molecules of Hydrogen & Oxygen AIM: What are the phases of matter?

  9. QUESTION: If a solid, and a liquid, and a gas are all made up of the same Molecules … then how do we get different phases of matter? It depends upon how much energy the molecules contain in each phase! AIM: What are the phases of matter?

  10. View the next few slides: TRY to draw them in your notebook! AIM: What are the phases of matter?

  11. Note: Holt O/H #206 Solid liquid gas

  12. Note: Holt O/H #206 Solid liquid gas Describe the molecules of the solid!

  13. Note: Holt O/H #206 Solid liquid gas Describe the molecules of the liquid!

  14. Note: Holt O/H #206 Solid liquid gas Describe the molecules of the gas!

  15. SOLIDS: have less energy the particle vibrate --- but are very close together AIM: What are the phases of matter?

  16. What is a solid? IN a solid, the particles of matter are tightly packed together. The particles cannot change position easily. The particles only vibrate back and forth in the same position. AIM: What are the phases of matter?

  17. LIQUIDS: have a little more energy the particle vibrate a little more --- therefore the substance does not have a definite shape AIM: What are the phases of matter?

  18. What is a liquid? • Liquids are able to change shape, because the particles of the liquid are not in fixed positions. • The particles vibrate more then the particles of a solid. AIM: What are the phases of matter?

  19. GAS: have the most energy the particle vibrate a lot --- therefore the substance does not have a definite shape nor a definite volume AIM: What are the phases of matter?

  20. GAS: have the most energy the more energy (heat), the more it vibrates, the more spread apart it becomes AIM: What are the phases of matter?

  21. What is a gas? • Definition: The particles of a gas are in constant motion. The particles of a gas are much further spread apart than in a solid or a liquid

  22. Dynamic version of Molecular Energy AIM: What are the phases of matter?

  23. Dynamic version of Molecular Energy AIM: What are the phases of matter?

  24. skip The energy of a molecule: Is also called its kinetic energy. Which type of molecule has the most kinetic energy? (solid, liquid, or gas) Which type of molecule has the least kinetic energy? AIM: What are the phases of matter?

  25. What happens when you add heat energy to a solid? AIM: What are the phases of matter?

  26. What happens to the molecules of the solid? How would you describe its kinetic energy? What happens when you add heat energy to a solid? AIM: What are the phases of matter?

  27. What happens when you add heat energy to a liquid? AIM: What are the phases of matter?

  28. What happens to the molecules of the liquid? How would you describe its change in kinetic energy? What happens when you add heat energy to a liquid? AIM: What are the phases of matter?

  29. What happens if you remove the energy from the liquid? AIM: What are the phases of matter?

  30. The liquid turns to a solid. The kinetic energy slows down The particles get closer together Can you really do that? AIM: What are the phases of matter?

  31. I C E AIM: What are the phases of matter?

  32. increases decreases Energy and States of Matter

  33. What happens if you remove the energy from the gas? AIM: What are the phases of matter?

  34. The gas turns into a liquid How would you describe the change in Kinetic Energy? How would you describe the change in vibration of the molecules? AIM: What are the phases of matter?

  35. SUMMARY AIM: What are the phases of matter? Identify the three basic phases of matter

  36. Class Activity AIM: What are the phases of matter? Worksheet Concepts 12-2

  37. Homework: INTERNET QUESTIONS FINISH WORKSHEET AIM: What are the properties of matter?

  38. What is a gas? • Question? • How does temperature affect the volume of a gas? • Hint: How does a very cold basketball bounce? AIM: What are the phases of matter?

  39. What is a gas? • Question? • How does temperature affect the volume of a gas? • Hint: What happens to a deflated helium balloon if you heat it up with a blow dryer? AIM: What are the phases of matter?
