  3. The Building • Type III (Ordinary Const): • Load Bearing Exterior Masonry Walls • Wood Joists, roofs & girders with interior support members being wood as well. • Usually no more than four-stories tall due to thickness of the exterior walls Prosser Fire District 3 - Officer Development

  4. The building cont. • Remodel • Void spaces are a common problem due to the ease of remodel. • Basements • Many have basements that are not accessible from the exterior. Prosser Fire District 3 - Officer Development

  5. The building cont. • Roofs • Typically flat or a slight slope from front to back • Expect parapet walls on the front but small to none on the other three sides. Prosser Fire District 3 - Officer Development

  6. The occupancies • Occupancy: • Many have storefronts with living areas above. • There will be floor loads that were not considered when originally built • Keep your perspective and be prepared. Prosser Fire District 3 - Officer Development

Fireground ops • Pre-Plan: • Know your way in before you arrive. • Know what’s in the building before you arrive. • Understand how much hose you’ll need and what resources you’ll need to do it. • Will you need to make access to adjacent bldgs.   9. Fireground ops cont. • Door Control: • Don’t break out large windows/doors without a very good reason, especially if crews are inside. • Keep the opening clear for easier hose advancement. Prosser Fire District 3 - Officer Development

  11. Fireground ops cont. • Big Fire – Big Water: • Get big water on the fire fast. • Consider 2 ½” hoseline only if you have the staff to deploy them efficiently. Prosser Fire District 3 - Officer Development
