  1. This source tells me that Singapore had carefully planned the location of its industries. From the source, we can see a concentration of some industries near the sea and a scattering other industries around housing estates. The reason for this pattern is possibly that the heavy industries were located near the sea so that they are away from the residential areas as they are often noisy and dirty. In addition, it is both cost effective and convenient to have such industries near the sea for easy transportation of machinery and raw materials. And from what I have learnt, I know that Singapore planned the location of its industries this way.

The other inference about Singapore’s industrial planning with regard to this source is that some industries were located near residential areas, as seen from the source, areas like St Michael estate and Toa Payoh. From what I have learnt about Singapore’s plans for industrialization, labour-intensive industries were located near residential areas so that it would be convenient and cost effective for the workers to travel to their workplace. Thus it again shows that Singapore’s plans for industrialization was carefully planned.

  3. The social indicators show improvement in the areas of infant mortality, life expectancy and literacy rate and which is the result of the success of Singapore’s industrialization programme. In the source it shows that literacy rate has been increasing from 1965 to 1985 which implies that more Singaporeans are being educated. This is true because the Singapore government’s plan of improving the skills of its workers between the years 1960s and 1970s where it focused on extending technical education for both boys and girls, thereby resulting in the increasing trend in literacy rate. Besides literacy rate, medical facilities are improving because infant mortality is declining and life expectancy is rising. This implies that the industrialization programme of Singapore is successful in developing the Singapore’s economy thereby allowing the government to improve the medical facilities.

  4. The source indicates that work stoppages were on the decline from 1965 onwards. The reason being Singapore’s industrialization programme which allowed the government to resolve unemployment problem. The measures taken probably had quick effects because between 1965 and 1968, the number of stoppages decreased from 30 to 4. In addition, the number of workers involved decreased tremendously implying that the industrialization programme was welcome by the people thus, giving them no reason to have any grievance against the government and striking in protest. From my contextual knowledge, this I know was made possible because of the many laws that the government had put in place to minimize industrial disputes, for example, the Industrial Arbitration Court in 1960 and the newlabour law in 1968.
