  2. Active Directory Management Snap-Ins • Start/Programs/Administrative Tools • Installed by default on domain controllers • Need to be installed on workstations • Run Adminpak.msi in i386 directory on 2000 server CD • Majority are Microsoft Management Console (mmc) snap-ins

  3. Terminal Services • Now included in 2000 OS • Install in remote administration mode • Add/Remove Programs/Windows Components • Allows maximum of two administrators to manage server • Can carry out almost most tasks • Including server reboot • Some software may not run in TS mode

  4. Terminal Services Client • Use Administrative Tools/Terminal Services Client to access • Need to install Adminpak.msi (see previous slide) or download from Microsoft • http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/recommended/TSAC/default.asp and select MSI Package • Can also use mmc snap-in • http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/recommended/TSAC/default.asp and select MMC Snap-in

  5. Command-line Utilities • Telnet • Telnet to server and run command line utilities • First start telnet service manually • Possible security risk (less if telnet from 2000 box) • Rconsole and Rshvc • Resource kit • Note security issues

Windows 2000 Support Tools • On Windows 2000 CD (Server and Professional) in support/tools directory • NB Sysprep is not installed by this setup — if required unpack deploy.cab • Some very useful tools, especially… • ADSIEdit — low level AD editor • Dnscmd — DNS administration • Replmon — Replication monitor • DCDiag — DC diagnostics • Netdiag — Network and related diagnostics

  8. Tools Included in OS • Ntdsutil • Command line utility • Repair, check, compact, move, and dump the directory database files. List site, domains and server information, manage operations masters, perform authoritative restore, create domains. • Need to be familiar with this (e.g. cleanup after failed demotion) • NB “popups off” command to disable gui popups
