  1. Rapid e-learning… Using a PowerPoint to Flash Converter to create e-learning content to support biosciences within nurse education Dr Damion McCormick

  2. Viewed as a challenging subject Chapple et al. 1993, Davies et al. 2000 • Material seen as relevant, but difficult to apply Prowse, 2003, Friedel and Treagust, 2005 • Not enough time given for study Quinn, 1995, Trnobranski, 1996, Sinclair, 1998 • Differentiation is a major issue Jordan et al. 1999, McKee, 2002 Context • Teaching biosciences in nurse education

  3. More support for those who need it? • Work at their own pace? • Access to resources? Context • Teaching biosciences in nurse education • Increased class sizes • Wide entry gate • Need to revisit the material in branch e-learning

  4. e-learning • Reusable learning objects (RLOs) • Online assessments within WebCT • Interactive whiteboards • Podcasts • PowerPoint to Flash conversion (Using rapid e-learning to create interactive ‘online lectures’)

  5. Rapid e-learning • Microsoft PowerPoint is one of the most commonly used software applications. • A range of tools are now available which can convert a PowerPoint presentation in to a flash move that can be delivered over the web. • Navigation and interaction can be added easily. • Record audio and video narration. • Allows ‘non-technical’ users to produce and edit content.

  6. Rapid e-learning Development process

  11. Assessments or activities • Add interactivity Media assets Hyperlinks Interactivity ‘browse’ ‘investigate’ ‘explore’ ‘choose’ ‘listen’ ‘watch’ Lecturer centred Student centred ACTIVE PASSIVE

  12. Rapid e-learning Development process

  13. Rapid e-learning • Provide a new platform for the delivery of existing resources • Non-technical users can produce and edit content easily • Students feel more engaged and supported • Interaction encourages active learning (deeper learning) What are the benefits? What are the disadvantages? • Time commitment (rapid but still requires development time) • Review process could be less rigorous? • Cost • Issues with sound quality and animations
