  5. Evaluate how information from family, school, peers and the community influences personal health.

What is bullying? “…bullying shall mean any overt acts by a person or group of persons directed against another person with the intent to ridicule, harass, humiliate or intimidate the other person while on school grounds, on a school bus, or at a school-sponsored activity, which acts are committed more than once against any person during the school year.” (GPS Board of Education Policy 5131.9)

  7. 5 Types of Behaviors That Contribute to Bullying

  8. 1- Physical Violence

  9. 2- Verbal Taunts & Put Downs • Based on race, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexualorientation, or other protected individual characteristics such as socio-economic status or physicalappearance.

  10. 3- Threats & Intimidation (through words, gestures, or actions)

  11. 4- Extortion or stealing of money or possessions • Locker rooms • Cafeteria • Stealing pocket books, wallets, backpacks

StatisticsSource: Ct Clearing House As many as 7% of America's 8th graders stay home at least once a month because of bullies. 60% of those characterized as bullies in grades 6-9 had at least one criminalconviction by age 24. 1/3 of U.S. teens are victims of cyber bullying Studies indicate that bullies often come from homes where physical punishment is used, where the children are taught to strike back physically as a way to handle problems, and where parental involvement and warmth are frequently lacking.

  14. Are you a BYSTANDER?“One present but not taking part in a situation or event”.

  15. Actions you can take when being bullied or witnessing bullying… “Students and parents may file verbal or written complaints concerning suspected bullying behavior, and students shall be permitted to anonymouslyreport acts of bullying to teachers and/ or school administrators.” (GHS Handbook)

  16. Consequences • Any report of suspected bullying will be promptlyreviewed. If acts of bullying are verified, prompt disciplinary action may be taken against the perpetrators consistent with his/ her rights of due process”. (GHS Handbook) • Possible “disciplinary actions” are: • Saturday detention • In or out of school suspension for up to 10 days • Expulsion
