  1. Composition 1 ALL your syllabi, for every class, are considered CONTRACTS: so read EVERY syllabus carefully.

  2. Course description • A college level, transfer course, ENGL 1301requires the study and mastery of the basic principles of effective expository and persuasive writing. (Expository writing is a type of writing that is used to explain, describe, give information, or inform.) • Each stage of the writing process is reviewed with special emphasis given to revision and editing.

  3. End-of-course outcomes • Demonstrate writing and speaking processes through invention, organization, drafting, revision, editing, and presentation • Specify audience and purpose • Apply modes of expression (i.e. descriptive, expositive, narrative, scientific, or self-expressive) • Participate effectively in groups with emphasis on listening, critical thinking, and responding • Apply basic critical thinking, problem solving, and technical proficiency • Research and write a documented paper

  4. Writing requirements • Major Projects include: • Preliminary Writing Major Projects (to determine what you already know about College-Level Academic Writing) • Business Letter to former teacher or professor • Persuasive Essay with 2 LCC Academic Database Sources • Another Business Letter—to me • A Final Essay Exam with LCC Academic Database Sources • Other short writing exercises

  5. Assessment • Grading is based on the instructor’s determination of the level of proficiency demonstrated by the student on all writing assignments, tests, quizzes, other daily work and final exam.

  6. Attendance policy • Attendance will be taken up until the official census date (Jan. 29) • Students who attend at least once leading up to the census date will be officially enrolled. • After the official census date, no formal attendance will be required. HOWEVER, THERE IS A PARTICIPATION GRADE, AND IT IS DETERMINED BY IN-CLASS QUIZZES THAT HAPPEN THE FIRST CLASS DAY OF EVERY WEEK. Attend class to pass the class!

  7. Attendance policy • Students who do not intend to remain enrolled mustinitiate a drop request. • Responsibility for class attendance rests with the student. Regular and punctual attendance is expected. • A student who is absent from a final examination receives a grade of 0 for the examination and a grade of F for the course.

  8. State policies • 3-peat—If a student signs up for a class for a third time, the State will not provide funding and the student will be required to pay an additional fee. • 6 W’s—Students cannot drop more than 6 classes throughout their college career. • Finishing on time—Students who obtain 90 or more credit hours at a Community College are no longer eligible for financial aid.

  9. Special services center • A student who wishes to request special accommodations in this class should notify the Special Services Center at 794-4137.

  10. Grade appeal • A student who wishes to question the final grade earned in a course or class activity should first discuss the situation with their instructor. If the issue is not resolved, the student should contact the Department Chairperson to request a review of the grade. • Students have two weeks (10 working days) after a final course grade is issued to appeal it.

  11. Use of electronic devices • The use of an electronic device shall not interfere with the instructional, administrative, student activities, public service, and other authorized activities on College District premises.

  12. Academic integrity • The college expects all students to engage in all academic pursuits in a manner that is beyond reproach.  • Students will be expected to maintain complete honesty and integrity in their experiences in the classroom.  • Any student found guilty of dishonesty in their academic work is subject to disciplinary action. 

  13. Consequences for plagiarism • First offense: Zero on the essay. • Second offense: automatic F in the course.

Why? They are considered the contract for the class, and if you don’t understand how the contract works (this is true for any contract), it is very unlikely you will do well. Students who do not understand the grading system in their classes do not do well in their classes—often only because they didn’t read the syllabus.

  15. You WILL succeed in this class IF you: • Take it as a College Class. (College works very differently!) • Attend regularly. • Read the syllabiright away—carefully. • Understand the grading system—right away! • Do the work (there is no extra credit). And do college-level work. (I will show you how.) • Connect with the material & class when you are here: I am teaching what you will need to succeed on the assignments. • Read the assigned material—regularly. (The free book is online; you need only click from the online syllabus.)
