  1. ADVANCED TECHNIQUES Antenna Phase Patterns, Offsets and Switching

  2. Advanced Antenna Controls • Antenna Phase Pattern • Antenna level pattern already covered • Similar principles • Antenna Offsets • Antenna positioned away from vehicle CofG • Antenna Switching File • Enable multiple patterns and/or offsets during scenario

  3. to receiver Signal Phase • Incident signal falling on antenna surface • Signal ‘collected’ to single point for transmission to receiver • Take example of simple patch antenna • Helixial coil focussed to central transmission line • Signal component incident on edge travels further than signal component incident at centre • Additional path length travelled = signal components not in perfect phase • Out of phase components contribute to signal degradation • Use Antenna Phase Pattern to simulate these effects

  4. Antenna Patterns • In order to access antenna patterns in SimGEN • Select Vehicle->Antenna->Antenna pattern control • There are 2 options to specify antenna patterns within SimGEN: • Level Pattern – (Covered earlier) • Phase Pattern • Click “Enable phase patterns” • Double-Click “Phase pattern file”

  5. Phase Pattern Editor • Same method for editting the phase pattern as per antenna level pattern editor • Pattern instead represents signal phase offsets NOT signal gain levels

  6. Antenna Offsets • Antenna positioned wrt vehicle body axis • Default set-up • Antenna coincident with vehicle CofG [0,0,0] • Antenna boresight at 90o elevation [0,0,0]

  7. Antenna Offsets • Antenna can be positioned ‘away’ from vehicle CofG • Particularly of benefit when simulating vehicle with multiple antennas • Example : aircraft with antennas at each wing-tip, tail and nose = navigation system can use GPS for attitude monitoring • Example Offset • Position offset 2m in body y-axis [0,2,0] • Angle offset 90o rotation along y-axis [0,90,0]

  8. Antenna Offsets • Antenna can be positioned ‘away’ from vehicle CofG • Particularly of benefit when simulating vehicle with multiple antennas • Example : aircraft with antennas at each wing-tip, tail and nose = navigation system can use GPS for attitude monitoring • …and so on….

  9. Antenna Offsets File • Select Vehicle->Antenna->Options->Offsets file • Set offset in metres along • X = positive toward vehicle front • Y = positive toward vehicle right-side • Z = positive toward vehicle bottom • Set offset in degrees • Heading = rotate in z-axis • Elevation = rotate in y-axis • Bank = rotate in x-axis

  10. Antenna Switching Enable multiple antenna patterns and offsets during scenario • Upto four phase and level patterns • Unlimited offsets • Select “Switching File” in “Antenna pattern control” • Ensure required antenna patterns enabled also • Time-ordered sequence of events
