  4. Nigella Lawson: surgery is the secret of my weight loss (but only for my bunions). When Nigella Lawson shed some of her voluptuous curves, her weight loss was the cause of great speculation. Nigella Lawson in 2007 (L) and in March 2012 Photo: REX FEATURES

  5. By Anita Singh, Showbusiness Editor 10:00PM BST 20 Apr 2012 Expensive diet supplements, anti-oxidant shakes and a breakfast of egg-white omelettes were all cited as her secret diet tricks, helping the Domestic Goddess to drop several dress sizes over the past 12 months. Yesterday, Lawson disclosed the real reason for her svelte new look: surgery to remove her bunions. The painful procedure has a recovery time of up to six months and Lawson, 52, said being unable to wander to the kitchen at will had given her pause to consider her food intake. “I have indeed lost weight. Almost a year ago, I had a very glamorous operation - a double bunionisation," she said, joking that the surgery was "the height of fashionable operative care”. She explained: "I couldn’t walk to the fridge afterwards and, actually, it’s quite a good diet; not because I stopped eating but because you can say to someone, ‘Can you get me a slice of cake?’ but it’s kind of embarrassing to say, ‘And now could you get me a second slice?’ “And then when I did start hobbling around I had to feel I was hungry to go to the fridge. And that was quite good, because I suppose it trains you a bit.
