  1. Operators Considerations on MPLS-TP OAM tools MPLS WG, 78th IETF - Maastricht draft-fang-mpls-tp-oam-considerations-00 Fang Li (CATR China) Han Li (China Mobile) Alessando D'Alessandro (Telecom Italia) Ruiquan Jing (China Telecom) Guangquan Wang (China Unicom) 1

  2. Document objectives • This Informational Internet-Draft is aimed at • Pointing out the urgent and increasing requirements of PTN applications for the metro packet transport network (PTN) • Moving forward the progress of an essential MPLS-TP OAM toolset • Proposing to adopt the solution based on draft-bhh-mpls-tp-oam-y1731

  3. Document structure • Carriers’ activities and positioning • Requirement of MPLS-TP OAM function toolset • OAM solutions investigation for PTN

  4. Carriers’ activities and positioning • Several Service Providers have undertook lab tests and field trial of different PTN solutions: MPLS-TP, PBB-TE,IP/MPLS • MPLS-TP emerged as the preferred solution for large scale PTN deployments • Multi-service transport platforms • Broadband and mobile backhauling • Ethernet Private Line services • MPLS-TP significant deployment has started this year • … and hence the urgent need for availability of multi-vendor PTN solutions with proven carrier class OAM is critical • Draft-bhh based OAM is a de facto standard in China

  5. Requirement of MPLS-TP OAM function toolset • In line with RFC 5860 • Further requested objective: • The OAM toolsets for MPLS-TP in PTN should provide the same functions, performances and transport operational behavior already available in ITU-T Y.1731 because from operators perspective it is simpler to maintain a single general OAM toolset when operating different technologies

  6. OAM solutions investigation for PTN Solutions Comments Available implementations and official tests It is recommended that the solution elements described in draft-bhh-mpls-tp-oam-y1731be included within the MPLS-TP toolkit for supporting MPLS-TP OAM Functions, and that the draft be progressed as a Standards Track RFC • Essential OAM functions (CC/CV, AIS/RDI,LB,LCK,LM,DM,CSF) • Compliant withRFC5860, RFC5586 • Passed the lab verificationtest in CATR • Passed 2 times EANTC interworking test (CEWC2009,MPLS2010) • At least four vendors support (ALU, Huawi, ZTE, Fiberhome) draft-bhh (1) BFD/LSP Ping Extension • Under development • Operators need verificationtesting for vendors’ equipments, at least 1-2 year later (2) new OAM tools Operator’s preference depends on the application domains, network evolution strategy, etc. If you had an urgent need for deployment with proven OAM behavior and compatible operations across optical & packet transport technologies, what solution should you select? CMCC, CTC and CUC have already selected solution 1 TI is going to test solution 1

  7. QUESTIONS ? THANK YOU 7

  8. OAM solutions investigation for PTN 2/2 • Operator’s preference depends on the application domain, network evolution strategy, etc. • E.g. priority is maximizing synergy with transport-oriented Operational and Management practices already in place (as draft-bhh provides) respect to maximizing the same behavior for evolving IP/MPLS networks (as extension of IP/MPLS OAM tools can provide)

  9. Carriers’ activities and positioning: China Mobile • From 2008Q1~2009Q3,Lab test and field trial of three researched solutions for 3G wireless backhauling: pre-MPLS-TP based PTN, PBT based PTN and IP/MPLS. • From 2009 Q4~2010Q1, it has built a pre-MPLS-TP based PTN network with more than 38000 PTN equipments distributed in about in 140 metro areas, to supporting TD-SCDMA wireless backhauling and L2 VPN services for business customs. • In 2010 Q2-Q3, the 2nd centralized purchasing of more than 100,000 PTN equipments based on draft-bhh OAM are on going. Typical Metro PTN network topology in China Mobile. 5387 PTN nodes are used for wireless backhauling, broadband (PON-OLT) backhauling, private line services

  10. Carriers’ activities and positioning: China Telecom • China Telecom has been evaluating PTN technology application for more than two years, and identified the 3G Mobile backhauling and Ethernet Private Line services as the major drivers for deploying PTN technology • It has built a PTN network with 2200 nodes in Chongqing, Sichuan • Further PTN networks are planned to be deployed

  11. Carriers’ activities and positioning: China Unicom • Since 2009, China Unicom has conducted a large scale of MPLS-TP based PTN lab testing to evaluate the maturity of pre-standard PTN implementations. The key drivenfor PTN application in China Unicom is multi-service carrying and transportation. • In 2010, China Unicom is planning to build PTN field trail networks basedon lab test

  12. Carriers’ activities and positioning: Telecom Italia • Investigated PTN technology since 2008 for broadband and mobile backhauling and TDM transport over a unified platform • Tested several vendors’ PTN equipment • OAM based on pre-standard MPLS-TP implementations • Already planned the deployment of a multi-vendor PTN network • Already planned testing of draft-bhh based OAM as a potential homogeneous solution
