South Hills Middle School

UBI Advanced School. 2006-2007. Intervention:. Tardy Sweeps Random tardy sweeps were conducted. Students who were tardy to class were assigned an after school detention by the classroom teacher.. UBI Advanced School. 2006-2007. Rationale:We chose tardy sweeps for our intervention because there are many students accumulating way too many tardies. This goal is important to our school for many reasons. First of all, each teacher starts each class with a starter question that is worth points.29834

    4. UBI Advanced School 2006-2007 Rational:

    5. UBI Advanced School 2006-2007 Data indicators: South Hills tracks tardies through tardy reports issued through our attendance office. Students receive office disciplinary referrals for 5, 10, 15 and 20 tardies. These are tracked through discipline tracker. Student academic data is kept by comparing students on honor roll quarter by quarter for the past three years. The use of tardy sweeps along with positive incentives has helped us reduce the number of students with significant tardies.

    6. UBI Advanced School 2006-2007 Trends and changes in data indicators after intervention: 2003-04 tardy referrals were extremely high for 3rd and 4th quarter. Quarterly and annual comparisons were made and reviewed

    7. UBI Advanced School 2006-2007 Implementation Description: Faculty and staff were verbally polled during a faculty meeting to determine a possible solution to the tardy problems in the school. They felt that tardy sweeps would help to alleviate most of the problem, at least for all except the few severe offenders. The steering committee took it under advisement and set up the parameters for implementation of the intervention. The faculty was then informed that tardy sweeps would be taking place starting on the Monday of the next week. Staff was asked to stand outside their doorways and monitor the hallways until one minute until the tardy bell. At that point an announcement was made over the loud speaker to indicate whether or not a tardy sweep would take place. At the tardy bell any student entering the classroom late was given an after school detention (ASD) by the classroom teacher. Students were not stopped in the halls by the administration rather they received their consequence directly from the teacher whose class they impacted by being tardy. This had been piloted previously by a couple of teachers and was found to be an effective deterrent to student tardiness so we knew it had potential school-wide.

    8. UBI Advanced School 2006-2007 Implementation Description: As students began to realize that a larger number of people could issue ASD’s other than just the administration, the numbers of tardies began to drop. Students are now seen quickly moving to their classes since the consequence is much greater for them than it had previously been. In addition to the success of the tardy sweeps, incentives were added to encourage students further and in a more positive vain. Teachers were very supported by the administration as they upheld the teacher issued ASD’s. Teachers have also received incentives as they are recognized for being in the hallways more and in aiding in keeping the halls free from tardy students. All ASD’s are recorded in the attendance office under “tardy sweep” such that accurate data can be collected on this specific intervention. The intervention is still operating at the school after some fine-tuning and is still effective in reducing the number of students tardy.

    9. UBI Advanced School 2006-2007 Most recent data: Tardies have been relatively constant for three years, but much lower than they were in the beginning

    10. UBI Advanced School 2006-2007 General Discussion: Tardies have been slightly higher recently. One thing we have noticed is that as tardies increase, so does our level of intervention. Because of this, tardies fluctuate quarterly. We need to improve our consistency of using our positive and negative interventions. We wish we would have
