  2. Hinduism • 1. It was founded in India. • 2. It is the world’s oldest living religion. • 3. There is no single founder. It is a mixture of different beliefs from the Aryan people of early India and people they conquered. • 4. Worship many gods and goddesses, but believe in a single spirit.

  3. BRAHMA = Creator SHIVA = Destroyer Brahman VISHNU = Preserver Hinduism

  4. Hinduism • Most important Gods/goddesses of Hinduism: • 1. Brahma – Creator of the Earth • 2. Vishnu – Kindly god who cares for people 3. Shiva – Destroyer of the world...cruel

  5. Beliefs of Hinduism 1. Reincarnation – rebirth of the soul. • Faithful to the gods/good behavior • gives good karma and you are born into a higher caste in the next life. • Not faithful/bad behavior – • gives bad karma and you are born into a lower caste or as an animal. • Caste system is proof that lives do improve. • Eventually you become “One with Brahmin” and you stop the cycle of rebirth

  6. Brahman Birth Birth Birth Birth Birth Birth Reincarnation Think of the cycle of reincarnation as a spiral. As you live each life you keep progressing upwards to join the spirit Brahman. If you do good deeds and get good karma – you move up. If you do bad deeds and have bad karma….you slide back down to restart.

  8. Beliefs of Hinduism • 4. Believe in Karma. Good that you do comes back to you in good things. Bad that you do comes back to you as bad things. • 5. Polytheistic (belief in many gods) • 6. There is no “RIGHT” way to worship. • 7. Vedas are sacred books. Upanishads is one of the holy books.

  10. Buddhism • 1.Founded in India 2. Founder– SiddarthaGuatama – he was a Hindu prince • He was called Buddha – “The Enlightened One” • 4. Don’t believe in a god.

  11. Buddhism 4 NOBLE TRUTHS • Life is suffering • Suffering is due to attachment • Attachment can be overcome • There is a path for accomplishing this (Middle Way)

  12. Beliefs of Buddhism • Human suffering is caused by selfish desires for power, money, and pleasure. • Giving up selfish desires will cure your problems, not gods/goddesses.

  13. Buddhism • 3. All people are equal. • 4. Believe in reincarnation. • 5. Believe in non-violence. • All life is sacred. • Believe in Karma Good that you do comes back to you as good things. Bad that you do comes back to you as bad things.

  14. KARMA By the actions, thoughts, and words man is releasing spiritual energy into the universe and he is, in turn, affected by influence coming in his direction. Man is the sender and receiver of all of these influences. This is Karma.

  15. Buddhism • 8. Follow the ‘Middle Way’ – don’t seek too much pleasure, too much power, or worry too much. Believe in the • Eightfold Path = 8 steps to Nirvana: • 9. Nirvana is reached when you are successful in the 8 steps of Buddhism. (Lasting inner peace).

  16. REINCARNATION The Wheel of Life The belief that it is not a simple physical birth of a person…it is the soul that transforms to a different form in the next life.
