Students will explore these elements of society to develop an appreciation and respect for the variety of human cultures. • Learning Expectations: • 1.01 Understand the diversity of human cultures. • 1.02 Discuss cultures and human patterns of places and regions of the world.

  3. In this lesson, you will: • Learn the meaning of community. • Identify the differences between a city, a town, and a suburb. • Do a Four-Square writing activity with the information presented in this presentation.

  4. What is a community? • A community is where people live.

  6. What is a community? • A community is where people play.

  7. All communities are alike in several ways: They all have physical features like water.

  8. All communities are alike in several ways: They all have different land forms:flat land, hills, or mountains.

  9. The largest community is a city.

  10. IN A CITY: • There are many tall buildings. • There are many people. • The buildings and people are very close together. • There are many places for people to live, work, and play together.

  11. Another Kind of Community is a suburb.

  12. A suburb: • is a medium-size commnunity. • is located near a large city. • has people who travel to a city for work.

  13. A town is another kind of community.

  14. A town: • is the smallest community. • usually has farmland. • has people who know each other well.

  15. Writing Activity • Write a paragraph about the different kinds of communities. • Try to use as much information as possible from this presentation • Don’t forget to use the Four-Square writing method to guide you. • There is an example on the next slide to get you started.
