Created in 1940 Private, non-profit organization Responsible for the preparation of all National Standards (voluntary, consensus-based) Officially recognized by the Brazilian Government as the National Standards Body Founding Member of ISO, COPANT and AMN IEC member since ABNT’s creation Signatory of the WTO/TBT/Code of Good Practices on Standardization (1995)

  4. OBJECTIVES • Management of Brazilian Standards development process • Promotion and diffusion of Standards • Represent Brazil in Regional and International Standards Organizations • Cooperation with similar organizations • Certification of Products, Services and Systems

STANDARDS DEVELOPMENT PROCESS ABNT’s standardization work is carried out by means of its CB – Brazilian Committees (TCs); and ONS – Sectorial Standards Bodies in which all interested parties are allowed to participate, in order to harmonize interests of manufacturers, consumers, the government and technical-scientific society, preparing its standards by consensus and taking into account the WTO/TBT/Code of Good Practices In Standardization

  7. DEVELOPMENT OF A BRAZILIAN STANDARD There is a demand from the society A working Group prepares the draft standard The draft standard is submitted to public enquiry The Standard is approved and put at the society disposal The ABNT makes the management of this process

ADOPTION OF INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS IN BRAZIL • ABNT policy for the adoption of international standards aims to: • Help the Brazilian participation in the global marketplace • Meet the WTO/TBT/Code of Good Practices for Standardization (ABNT: 1995) • In view of the code, the standardization program of the national sectors must prioritise the adoption of international standards

  18. BRAZILIAN PARTICIPATION IN ISO TC AND SC ISO: 734 TC + SC ABNT: 430, of which: P-Member: 169 , including: 50 TC 119 SC O-Member: 261 * Including ISO/IEC JTC 1

  19. MAIN CHALLENGES • Count on adequate support (technical and financial) for its core activities • Be an effective leader in Latin America, helping other countries to improve • Increase and improve Brazilian participation in the international and regional standardization processes • Improve staff skills and training • Improve and increase communication with stakeholders • Increase co-operation with other standards organizations, particularly at Pan-American level
