  1. The Church is a Mystery

  2. The Church is a Mystery God loves all people and wills everyone to be saved. The Church contains the fullness of Revelation.

  3. The Church is a Mystery Christ is the one true path to salvation. As disciples, we are called to follow and obey Christ.

  4. The Church is Visible The Church is the sign and instrument of the saving union between God and humanity.

  5. The Church is Visible Sacraments are visible signs of God’s invisible grace, instituted by Christ, for our sanctification. There are seven sacraments: Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Reconciliation, Marriage, Holy Orders, and Anointing of the Sick.

  6. The Church is Visible • Christ spoke of the necessity of joining the Church through Baptism. • In the Gospel of John, Jesus said, “No one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit” (3:5).

  7. The Church is Visible • We see the reality of the Church in people gathered for the Eucharist.

  8. The Church is Visible • The Church has the obligation to proclaim truth to the world, an obligation that inspires and gives life to the Church’s missionary activities.

  9. The Church is Invisible Transubstantiation • At the moment of consecration, the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. • We take this on faith, having been told by Christ, “This is my body, . . . this is my blood”.

  10. The Church is Invisible Grace The Church depends completely on God’s grace to be holy. Grace is God’s unmerited favor. Grace is divine assistance.

  11. The Church is Invisible Forgiveness • Christ instructed his disciples to forgive sins. • Forgiveness cannot be seen but must be accepted in faith. • Because sin is an offense against God, only God can forgive it.

  12. The Church is Invisible Forgiveness • Because the Church sanctifies, it is natural that she embraces sinners.

  13. The Church is Invisible Holiness • God calls us to be holy. • To be holy is simply to live as someone who belongs to God, living by the vision of the Kingdom of God. • Without the presence of the Holy Spirit, we cannot know God.

  14. The Church – From Visible to Invisible • The visible elements of the Church are meant to guide us to an understanding of, and belief in, the invisible (spiritual) elements of the Church, from the sign to the thing signified, from the Sacraments to the mysteries.
