  1. Project Title: NEWS Science Integration Team (NSIT) Project team: J.Entin (NASA Hq), P.R. Houser (GMU), R.A. Schiffer (UMBC), W.B.Rossow (CUNY), C.A.Schlosser (MIT), W.M.LaPenta (NASA MSFC), B.Lin (NASA LaRC), E.G. Njoku (JPL) Project status: • Establishment of a NEWS Data Integration Center (NDIC) at IGES to serve the entire NEWS team and its partners by compiling, integrating, diagnosing and disseminating water and energy observational data and model results relevant to NEWS investigations. • NSIT assignments as Points of Contact (POC) for individual NEWS investigations to ensure communications, coordination and timely reporting • Initiation and leadership of cross-cutting NEWS integration projects to demonstrate the unique contributions of NEWS (1) Coupling of land and atmosphere on daily time scale (lead: Rossow,Njoku) (2) Exploring water and energy cycle variability and extremes (lead: Houser, LaPenta, Schiffer) (3) Water and energy cycle assessments on annual and longer time scales (lead: Lin, Schlosser) Science issue:The NEWS program recognizes the need for a comprehensive effort to integrate model and data products and theory to quantify the rates and variations of water and energy cycling throughout the global climate system. Approach:NSIT is responsible for Integration of science activities to serve the overall purpose of NASA by acting as an interface with other NASA Earth Science research foci and activities, coordinating the execution of the NEWS Science Integration Plan, and leading specific studies needed for integration of the results of independent product-driven and discovery-driven investigations. Specific NSIT Responsibilities: • NEWS Science and data product Integration • NEWS PI Coordination • Linkages to NASA Earth Science system and technology components • Science advocating • Organizing water and energy cycle related scientific meetings and conferences • NEWS scientific planning • Representing NEWS to national and international partners • Support of NEWS administration functions NEWS linkages:Continuing coordination with the national and international scientific community through • Service as PI of the WCRP/GEWEX International Project Office • Routine participation at the meetings of the NRC Climate Research Committee • Organizing sessions at national meetings of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) NEWS IP NEWS-Letter No.1 Updated: November 1, 2007
