BENEFITS OF MANGO FARMING • Source of income- it is a business (mango is a viable Kenyan cash crop) – poverty reduction • Creation of employment • Mango is easy to manage once established • Mangoes enrich human diet – provide vit. • Kenyan climate is suitable for Mango farming especially semi arid lands

  3. Mango Farming in Kenya Current Status • Main varieties • Apple • Van Dyke • Tommy Atkins • Ngowe • Infrastructure – is poor leading to high transport cost • Low farmgate prices – ranges between Ksh.1-2 per fruit • High input cost – especially pesticides

  4. Low fruit quality due to pests and diseases like • Mongo weevil • Fruit fly • Anthracnose • Poor market – farmers depend on the domestic and to a small extent on foreign market especially the Middle East • Infiltration of broker – offering farmers low prices

  5. Challenges at various points in the mango value chain • High taxation – due to multiple taxation • Poor and unstructured marketing infrastructure – leading to low prices • Low availability of good quality planting materials

  6. Challenges cont. • Lack of information • Market demand and suitable varieties for the various ecological zones • Control of mango fruit weevil • Post harvest loses especially due to poor storage and transport system • Tedious product certification- in cases of value addition • Betrayal of farmers by buyers – unhonored contracts • Inadequate market research skills • High cost of inputs

  7. Possible Solutions • Formulate policies governing taxation of products • Capacity build farmers on mango husbandly, marketing and home based processing • Promote farmer to farmer innovation • Promote formation of farmer marketing groups • Provision of subsidized farm inputs

  8. ROLE OF STAKEHODERS • Provision of relevant information that promotes the mango business • To Facilitate formulation of policies that supports the business • Perform regulatory functions especially in the areas of quality of propagation materials, inputs and marketing

  9. The Kenyan mango farmer is grateful for the support from Ministry of Agriculture, PSDA/GTZ, KENFAP to the Mango industry
