EU Research

Past programmes (FP4 and FP5) addressed Environmental and Geographic information

INFSO - GI 2000: 32 projects demonstrated the potential as well as the shortcomings of GI (more political than technical)

Environment: GIS were developed to run RTD projects in various areas (e.g. estuarine circulation; coastal zones management; floods; water ressources)

slide14

EU Research: FP6 outlook

  • New RTD Programme includes 7 thematic priorities, 3 of which include aspects of relevance to Environment and Geographic Information:
    • 2. Information Society Technologies (GI and demonstration aspects)
    • 4. Aeronautics and Space (GMES)
    • 6.Sustainable development, global change and ecosystems (Observing and Forecasting Systems)
