  9. Prompts • Analyze the theme, the inevitable failure of the American Dream, in Steinbeck’s novel, Of Mice and Men. Analyze the dream of living off the “fatta of the land” and how it influences the characters in the novel (George, Lennie, Candy, Crooks, or Curley’s wife). What does Steinbeck say about the impossibility of the American Dream through these characters? At the same time, what is the power of the dream, even if it is fruitless? Use direct quotations and specific examples to support your views. • Compare and contrast George and Lennie. How are they similar? What are their central differences? How does Steinbeckset them up as foils, being perfectly opposite. What does each gain from the other? Why must Lennie die in the end and why must George do it? What central themes does Steinbeck develop through their comparison? Use direct quotations and specific examples to support your views. • Of Mice and Men has a controversial history. It has been repeatedly banned by school boards. Why might this book have been banned? Is such an action justified? • How does the setting of Of Mice and Men influence the book's thematic development? In answering, consider the connection between the novel's setting and the characters' vocations. Also, how does Steinbeck signal the importance of setting in his choice of place names? • Consider Curley's wife. Is she a sympathetic or an unsympathetic character? Would you characterize Steinbeck's portrayal of her as fair, or do you detect misogyny in his depiction? • Discuss "the rabbits," the dream of a farm that George and Lennie share and repeat aloud. How does this story of "how things will be" function in the novel? What does it reveal about George, Lennie, and their relationship?
