Web Content Management System • stand-alone application • create, manage, store and deploy content on Web pages • text and embedded graphics, photos, video, audio, and code • catalog and index content, select or assemble content at runtime, or deliver content to specific visitors in a requested way • allows client control over HTML-based content, files, documents, and web hosting plans

  5. What is Joomla!? Joomla! is software that lets you make and update web pages easily. You can think of a Joomla! website as bringing together three elements. • Your content, which is mainly stored in a database. • Your template, which controls the design and presentation of your content (such as fonts, colors and layout). • Joomla! Which is the software that bring the content and the template together to produce web pages.

Localhost or Remote Host Installations • A localhost is a Web server and associated database that is set up directly on your computer or that may be on a local network either within your home or business environment. You have direct easy access to the machine upon which the software is situated • A remote host is one that you access via the internet it may be owned by you or you may rent it from a dedicated hosting company. In this case there are different flavors such as managed, dedicated, virtual, or shared hosting. But in simple terms the computer that houses the software is remote from you.

  9. Transferring the files The first task is to upload the uncompressed collection of files that you created during the last section to your Web server. If you are installing on a localhost - for example the computer you are working on – then it is simply a case of copying and pasting (or moving) the files into the root folder (or a sub-folder) of the Web server. If however you are running the server on a remote host, then this process will involve the use of a FTP client program, some Web Browsers have such a tool built in or can be added in, or the control panel of your host provider, if one is available.

  10. Obtaining Joomla! • Download and extract Joomla .zip file [example - 'Joomla_3.0.1-Stable-Full_Package.zip'] to /var/www/ directory • make its permission to executable [755 or 777] • http://localhost/joomla

  12. Create a Page Creating a Web page in Joomla! requires creating the content for the page, then assigning the content to a menu item for viewing. The most common type of content in Joomla! is the article. Articles may contain embedded media such as images, sound files and video in addition to the text of the article.

  13. Template Access both the HTML and CSS code for the template by browsing to the "Template Manager" while logged in as Administrator in Joomla!, choose "Edit HTML" or "Edit CSS" to make your desired changes.

  14. Extensions and Modules These are developed to carry out the many common tasks that a website may be used for and there are extensions for commercial, multimedia and all types of informative content. Many of the extensions are also free to download, and in order to use them you simply have to download and install them with your Joomla! installation.
