  • Robert Shaw rewrote the story about the USS Indianapolis and got the date wrong.

Still more jaws

STILL MORE JAWS

  • Martha’s Vineyard, MA used as Amity Island.

    • Residents paid $64 to run and scream.

  • Mechanical shark broke down and hence was unavailable for certain shots.

    • This led to the camera becoming the shark.

    • Mechanical shark named “Bruce.”

  • Scene where Brody is trapped in the sinking ORCA took 75 takes to get it right.

Jaws isn t over yet

JAWS ISN’T OVER YET

  • Shark was never tested until it got to the set and then it sank right to the bottom.

  • Jaws was the first movie to hit $100 million at the box office.

  • First summer saw 67 million people in the Jaws theatre thus becoming the first blockbuster.

  • 25% of the film shot from the water level giving audience perspective as if they were treading water.

Dah dum dah dum

Dah . . . Dum . . . Dah . . . Dum

  • Focus of the film is on the suspense of the situation.

    • Fear of the unknown.

  • Not showing the shark until the end, relying on hints and aftermath, makes the appearance more frightening.

  • More suspense added as protagonist end up stranded in water to fight the shark.

  • Add to suspense with Brody being afraid of water.

    • When he has to fight on board the boat it makes the ending more uplifting.

Ahhhhh it s a shark

AHHHHH . . . IT’S A SHARK

  • Less is more!

    • Less shark and less explanation equals more suspense.

  • John Williams music becomes the heartbeat of the film.

    • Alerts audience of shark

    • Absence of music tells perhaps there is no danger.

    • Music lures audience into false sense of security.

  • Despite all of our sciences sometimes things don’t function on our rules.
