  5. Teen Obesity In America According to the latest research findings. Teenage obesity in America is increasing to about 16%. To give exact figures, 9 million teens in America below 15 years are obese. This figure is almost three times the teen obesity figures in 1980. Causes of Teen Obesity • The main reasons for teenage obesity are overeating, less activity or inactivity, and excess TV viewing and computer use. • If a teen eats and drinks more than the body needs, the excess energy stores in the form of body fat. • And, adding to this, if the teen is not doing enough regular exercise, it increases the problem.

  6. Is Obesity Really a Problem? How to Prevent Teen Obesity • Eat a healthy diet. • Avoid eating fast food and junk food. • Do regular exercise. • Be involved in physical activities throughout the day • Avoid watching TV or using a computer for longer durations.

  7. Importance of Making Healthy Food Choices Making Healthy Choices Would Most Likely Lead To… • Experiencing good health. • Feeling good. • Having more energy. • Reducing the risk of cancer. • A longer life span.

  8. Consequences of Poor Food Choices • Obesity • Energy Loss • Heart Attack • Fatigue • Stress • And sometimes DEATH!!!

  9. Health Risks of Obesity Once you suffer from obesity you run an increased risk of developing a number of conditions. ·High blood pressure and stroke are twice as common in obese people. ·Evidence is strong that obesity increases the risk of breast cancer after menopause, womb cancer, kidney cancer, and colon cancer. ·Breathing difficulties often occur during sleep called sleep apnea. ·Gall bladder disease is three times as likely to occur in middle-aged obese women. ·Type 2 diabetes is four times more common in middle-aged obese people than in middle aged people of normal weight. ·Coronary heart disease is twice as common in obese men under 45.

  10. Height Weight Table to Determine Obesity People Over this height to weight ratio are obese

  11. What is BMI? Why Is It Important? The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a statistical measurement derived from your height and weight. Although it is considered to be a useful way to estimate healthy body weight, it does not measure the percentage of body fat. BMI Weight Categories: Underweight = BMI<18.5 Normal weight = BMI 18.5-24.9 Overweight = BMI 25-29.9 Obesity = BMI 30-34.9 Severe Obesity = BMI 35-39.9 Morbid Obesity = BMI 40>

  12. Is BMI Always an Accurate Measurement of Obesity? It's important to note that although BMI is accurate most of the time, it may overestimate or underestimate body fat. For example, BMI doesn't distinguish between body fat and muscle mass, which weighs more than fat. Many NFL players have been labeled "obese" because of their high BMI, when they actually have a low percentage of body fat. Some health experts say that body fat percentage is a better measurement of weight status than BMI.

  13. How Should Obesity Be Determined? Because of the possibility for error, BMI should be just one of many gauges used to assess a person's weight status and health. The National Institute of Health recommends that doctors assess whether their patients are overweight based on three factors: • BMI • Waist circumference – a measurement of abdominal fat • Risk factors for diseases associated with obesity, such as high blood pressure, high LDL and low HDL cholesterol, high blood sugar, and smoking.
