Background • Water is a critical resource and raw material used in the beverage industry. • While many water stewardship initiatives exist, these efforts often stop short of recovering, purifying and reusing all the available water. • Innovative technologies exist that could greatly increase safe water reuse, enhance sustainability and reduce costs.

The Problem • Lack of expert guidance or best practices utilizing available treatment technologies in beverage production & bottling. • Absent formal guidance, the risk of being perceived as using “unclean water” may overwhelm decisions to maximize water sustainability that could be easily achieved.

Timeline • First Guideline draft by core expert committee: April 5th2012 • Review by beverage bottling experts: June 5th • Guideline technical revision: projected as August 20th • Editorial review: September 10th • Second Guideline draft: September 14th • Review by extended expert/stakeholders group: October 29th • Guideline for dissemination by November 1st • Guideline publication expected in December2012

The Approach • The Risk Science Innovation and Application Center (RSIA) of the International Life Sciences Institute – Research Foundation (ILSI-RF) convened a panel of international experts from industry, governments and academia to draft a guideline of best practices. • Expertise covered by the panel includes: • Engineering • Microbiology • Toxicology • Sociology

Expert & Review Panels • Expert panel has addressed best practices for water reuse, including: • Recovery opportunities • Technology selection • Water quality targets for specific end uses • HACCP based management and monitoring. • Guideline has/will undergo independent expert and stakeholder review. • External review process includes: 1) technical experts, and 2) Broader review from the beverage and water sustainability community.

Accomplishments • First full draft of the Guideline completed in April 2012 and reviewed. • ~ 200 distinct comments were received from 14 beverage experts in the first review round. • Resulted in revision to content and structure of the guideline. • Included further assessment of water quality for non-potable uses. • Core Expert Committee submitted final revision drafts for assigned sections based on the first round of review.

Next Steps • Revised draft will undergo editorial and readability review and returned to core committee for technical corrections by October 29. • A broad water expert/stakeholder group will conduct a second review cycle in late October. • Groups interested in participating in the second review cycle are welcome - cleanwateruse@ilsi.org • Will include experts in risk communication • The core expert committee will review and finalize the document. • Public release expected December 2012

  13. Publication & Outreach • Depending on funding, a workshop will be held in late 2012 to publicize the guideline and provide a final opportunity for comment by interested parties. • The final Guideline will be published on line and hard copy as a freely available monograph from ILSI-RF. • Guideline will be presented to meetings of professional societies and other appropriate venues to enhance publicity and broad adoption.
