Electronic Waste Forum 11/25/02 • Nonprofits face problems with e-waste: • Public donates electronics (condition unknown) and a majority do not want to pay a fee for non-working equipment. • Have to pay market rates for disposal AND bear the costs of handling, storage, packaging and transportation. • Very little financial assistance from waste haulers and government for e-waste.

Electronic Waste Forum 11/25/02 • Electronic Recycling Costs and Charges for CRT’s are a moving target: • Current costs/charges Vary by county for CRT’s (computer monitors and T.V.’s) • Actual Future Costs for CRT disposal are unknown and at risk of climbing • Counties are raising fees, some starting Jan 1st 2003

Electronic Waste Forum 11/25/02 • Important e-waste stewardship issues: • There shall be a level of producer responsibility and a fund created to pay for proper disposal • The fund shall have the highest degree of certainty that it will not deplete • The public shall not be confused with additional fees for e-waste

  4. Electronic Waste Forum 11/25/02 • The solution should include: • A definition of class-levels for e-waste by commodity. • A way for nonprofit organizations to accept donations at a local level without the penalty of disposal fees. • A fee-recovery program for NGO and commercial recyclers.
