  1. Antigonish Poverty Reduction Coalition Summary of Accomplishments

Antigonish Food Security Coalition (AFSC) • Accomplishments: • Sustainable Food Funding from the McConnell Foundation - 1st stage of funding used to conduct a local food security assessment to assess consumer demand and producer needs related to local food. Final report is being completed to release to partners and community shortly and will apply for second stage of funding to address needs. • Lease of Local Land for Agricultural Use - Beginning in the spring of 2013 we will create projects that support community small scale farming projects on the land. • Other accomplishments; • VOICES Community Forum • Workshops for Consumption of Local Fruits and Vegetables • Food Security Advocacy • People Assessing Their Health (Community Health Impact Assessment Tool)

  3. Antigonish Community Transit (ACT) • Accomplishments: • Creation of a Community Transit Action Group – Group formed to address issues of community transit, especially those outlined in the APRC 5-Year Action Plan • NS Moves Grant for Community Transit Strategy – Secured funding from NS Moves to compile results of past research on community transit, possible initiatives for this area and to create a Community Transit Strategy. This will be completed by March. • Other Accomplishments: • Community Transit BrainStorming Session

Affordable Housing Society • Accomplishments: • Organizational Accomplishments – Various organizational elements have been accomplished including the creation of mission and vision statements, incorporation of the society, director’s liability insurance, executive positions secured except for the position of chair. The application for charitable tax status is currently being done. • Creation of a 5-Year Strategy – This strategy will advise and direct our plans over the next five years, including project #1 to build an affordable housing unit in Antigonish that will be 8 – 12 units. • Other Accomplishments: • Land Secured, Architectural Design, $8,000 Grant from Economic Development, Applications for Funding, “Affordable Housing Film”

  5. Education Action Group • Accomplishments: • Education Action Group Formed – To address educational challenges outlined in the APRC 5-Year Action Plan. • Speaker from Public School System – Spoke on issues of poverty within the formal school system that need to be addressed and initiatives that are in place

  6. Recreation Activities • Accomplishments: • Coordination of Recreation Activities – Creation of the Antigonish Kid’s Corner (AKC) website (www.antigonishkidscorner.ca) to provide free local resources for kid’s sports, activities and recreation. • Collaborative Efforts to Provide Free Recreation Programs - GO (Get Outdoors) Free Play free after-school program organized by the County Rec Dept. and Free Play as well as GO Free-Play Keppoch Fun Days combination. • Identification of New and Free Activities – Creation of awareness about new and free activities (e.g. We Move This Town) and identification of areas where activities could be offered for free (e.g. free swim days at StFX).
