  3. School Sport Policy What to include? Aim: The aim should include the definition of sport for your school Roles and Responsibilities This should include the role of the sport coordinator, the role of coaches and the areas they are responsible for developing and managing. It should also state how staff are selected for these positions. • Policy Inclusion • Emergency Care CPR accreditation • First Aid • Sun Smart • Risk assessments • Transport • Costing process • Selection of teams and school representatives • Permission notes • Awards and presentations • Use of external providers /agencies • TPL Affiliated AssociationsZone and Region Resources Organisation of the 3 major carnivals

These roles include: Leading school sport committee Organising School Sport Programs Conducting the 3 major carnivals annually Organising school teams and coaches for competitions/gala days and knockouts. Implementing and updating the School Sport Policy Ensure talented students are provided with the opportunity to trial for a representative team. Attending meetings as the Principal’s Representative Role of SportCoordinator

  6. School Sport Scenarios • A teacher approaches you about their concerns regarding their allocation to a sporting team. They are not prepared to coach the students as they have minimal knowledge about the sport and they are worried they will be sued if a student is hurt during a sports session where they are supervising. 2. The School Athletics Carnival is scheduled in 4 weeks time. The venue is booked but the previous sports organiser has left no organisational information for you from previous carnivals. What do you do? 3. Students from your school have been participating in Boxing Fitness lessons. They have asked their instructor for permission to spar in the ring. The instructor speaks to the supervising teacher who asks you for guidance. What do you do? 4. Two students have a physical confrontation which involves language and punches during a representative school sport knockout game and have been dismissed from the field of play. What procedures should be followed?

They are not prepared to coach the students as they have minimal knowledge about the sport and they are worried they will be sued if a student is hurt during a sports session where they are supervising. • Response: • Find out what TPL is available ie School Sport Unit, Sport and Recreation, State Sporting Association • Every staff member is responsible for the supervision of the activity, and in this capacity, exercise a duty of care for the students involved. Note – Duty of Care is ‘reasonable care to manage foreseeable risks’. • When a student is injured while in the care of the school, it is possible that legal action will be taken. If this occurs, it is invariably the State of New South Wales that is sued rather than individual schools or staff members. • Teachers should not be concerned about incurring any individual liability provided that the teacher is not guilty of conduct which is criminal in nature or a blatant negligence direction has been giving.

The instructor speaks to the supervising teacher who asks you for guidance What do you do? • Response • It is important to note that Boxing is one of the banned sports in NSW Government schools • The Sports Organiser should consult the Sport Safety Guidelines http://www.sports.det.nsw.edu.au/spguide/activities/index.php • Contact the Principal, Sports Unit Representative (RSO, NSW CHS Officer to seek clarification regarding any issues • Guidelines indicate that sparing can occur in Martial Arts which dictates there must be a qualified instructor supervising. • Relevant Sport Guidelines should be given to all teachers who are taking representative sporting teams or school sport activities

  10. 2. School Sport Scenarios 4. Two students have a physical confrontation which involves language and punches during a representative school sport knockout game. And have been dismissed from the field of play. What procedures should be followed? Response: It is important to note in this event that schools deal with these situations differently. And it is vital that schools have a guideline that they follow within their welfare systems that address such an occurrence. Below is an example of the response that has occurred in a local setting. 1. The supervising teacher completes a RISC notification on the students involved with a detailed report of the incident. 2. Notification to relevant organisations - regional sports, parent body of sport (often done by officials refereeing the game) and the school executive. 3. In this situation, the students depending on the level of breach can be either suspended from school for physical violence, suspended from school sport for a duration, or suspended from participating in that particular competition for a duration. It is not uncommon for the student to receive a suspension from weekend sport. Often in sports such as soccer, league and union students are requested to attend a judiciary.

Tips and hints • Communication: answer all correspondence and disseminate all information as soon as is practicable • Form a Sport Committee: share the load • Create a sport folder: both electronic and hard copy, to be centrally located • Raise staff awareness of sporting events and results: include these items in the school newsletter/daily messages • Put all sporting fixture dates on the school calendar: in the newsletter and on display in the staffroom • Create a sport wall • Offer to provide a folder of activities to any staff who need new/fresh ideas for conducting sport • Consider restricting sport storeroom access to your committee and selected student monitors • Keep the office staff onside at all times • Have a Sport box next to the fax machine • Provide all resources to staff for your sport program :it alleviates all excuses! • Try to negotiate a reduced teaching load if not currently in place • Attend your zone meetings: communicate all information back to coaches and the Principal • Promote your sport programs and student achievements
