  3. What’s the Same? • Good Teaching • Home-School Collaboration • Importance of Conversation • Fiction is STILL Fashionable!

  4. Nothing New!! • Importance of reading aloud • Importance of fluent independent reading • Building background knowledge • Developing a strong vocabulary

  5. What ISNew in ELA? • More non-fiction reading and writing • Emphasis on text-based details • Focus on “why” and “how” • Need for greater parent and student accountability

  6. And More!!!! • More persuasive expository writing • Higher expectations per grade • More social studies and science • Earlier introduction of skills, beginning in kindergarten
