  1. SaveyourChildfrom Cyber Pornography Cyber pornography is largely affecting the younger generation. Although it cannot be completely stopped, it can nevertheless be restricted. As a parent, you must first understand that as much good matter the Internet conveys; it also carries substantial amount of unwanted and ill messages. Here are some signs that indicate that your child might be at the risk of falling prey to cyber porn or to other objectionable matter on the Internet.

  2. Symptoms Your child spends alarmingly large amount of time online, especially at night. Some pornography matter found on your child's computer. Some secrecy in your child's activities and movements. Your child is receiving or making calls to people whom you don't recognize. Or receives/ sends gifts without your approval. Your child feels uncomfortable to browse the Net in your presence, or switches off the monitor, when you enter the room. The most alarming signal - your child withdrawing from the family.

  3. As a parent how can you protect your child? First and foremost, if you discover that your child is accessing porn material on the Internet, never look at your child as a wrong doer. The child is just a victim of curiosity. Make the child understand what is right and what is wrong.

  4. Here are a few suggestions and tips for parents to ensure the safety of your kids from the evil of online pornography i. Place the computer in a central area of the house, in such a place where it is easily accessible to all the members of the family and hence, easily monitored. ii. Warn your children never to disclose personal information like phone number, address to anyone on the Net. iii. Prepare a checklist of the sites that your children can visit, the do’s and the don’ts of browsing: like not posting their personal details, or photographs on the Net or getting emotionally close to the person they meet in chat rooms. iv. Use the blocking features suggested by your ISP or block cyber porn with software. These days, there are numerous softwares available for free download on trial basis. These softwares can be bought and installed. Some sites where these software can be purchased online: a. Surfwatch - www.surfwatch.com b. Cybersitter - www.cybersitter.com c. Netnanny - www.netnanny.com d. Cyberpatrol - www.cyberpatrol.com v. Encourage your children to talk to you openly about their experiences on the Net and alert them on the possible dangers. vi. Formulate your own set of rules and guidelines. Make sure that your child understands these rules and agrees to conform to them while online. Regularly, check the sites that your child visits. vii. As a responsible parent, notify the police or the concerned authority if you sense that someone is trying to exploit your child on the Net. viii. Remember, the child tends to follow the footsteps of the elders at home. So, the elders should first check themselves. ix. Finally, educate yourself, be a computer literate and net savvy and check for yourself for what is good for your child and what is not in good interest for the child. Where to report? As parents, you have the legitimate concern about what your children are exposed to and what damage online pornography can do. The widespread pornography on the Net has caused equal moral panic among the parents and law enforcement authorities. In case, you notice that your child or any child is being victimised through the Internet, report the incident to the Cyber Crime Investigation Cell [CCIC] of Mumbai police. Contact the CCIC at 022-263082. Or, contact the nearest police station for help and guidance.
