  2. Welcome To greece The Greek culture has spanned thousands of years. Its creations and influences still harbor in our modern culture today. The Olympic games, mythological stories, language, food, and so much more can be linked back to the Ancient Greeks just like many other cultures. Welcome to Greece, the land of light.

  3. National facts • Name: Greece • Capital: Athens • Official Language: Greek • Traditional Motto: “Freedom or Death” • Estimated Population: 11,300,000 • Currency: Euro, used to be the drachma • Popular Symbol: Olive branch

Greek time periods • NEOLITHIC PERIOD (6000 - 2900 BC) • EARLY BRONZE AGE (2900 - 2000BC) • Minoan Age (2000 - 1400 BC ) • Mycenaean Age (600 - 1100 BC) (backdrop for myths started) • The Dark Ages (1100 - 750 BC) • Archaic Period (750 - 500 BC) (said to be the “true” start of Greece) • Classical Period (500-336 BC) • Hellenistic Period (336-146 BC)

  5. Ancient greek city states In Ancient Greece they had what was called “city states,” which were independent, sovereign cities. Here are a few of the most recognized and what they were known for: • Athens – philosophy, democracy, humanism • Sikyon – arts, was said to be where Prometheus brought fire to man • Corinth – trading, artisans, merchants • Sparta – war, valor • Delphi – oracles, prophecies, Apollo was a patron of this city state • Olympia – Olympic games, site for many of the Greek gods’ & goddesses’ temples

  6. Influences The Roman culture was greatly influenced by the Greeks. It wasn’t until 146 BC that Greece eventually began to fall under Rome’s conquest. Their were many things that Greece not only contributed to the Roman culture but to the world as well. Here are a few: • Arts & Architecture – various sculptures, vases, murals, Olympic games, etc. • Philosophy – theories of thought, ideas, & reasons that continued on in various other cultures. • Literature & Language – epic poetry, Greek mythology, various root words. • Science & Technology – geometry, some laws in mathematics, some medical advances, etc.
