    1. Learning By Volunteering Adam Smith College, Angus College, Langside College and Scotland Colleges

    2. Project overview-Learning by Volunteering March 2007 report titled Volunteering in Scotland Colleges, carried out by SCFU, found scope for improvement in developing volunteering across the sector. Within the UK, research done by Institute for Volunteering Research in England and VDS in Scotland shows the huge range of benefits volunteering confers to individuals. Research base demonstrates the links between volunteering and the development of the four capacities for Curriculum for Excellence – Successful Learner, Confident Individuals, Responsible Citizens and Effective Contributors.

    3. Learning by Volunteering Project Partnership between Adam Smith, Angus and Langside College and Scotland Colleges Broad aim of the project was to actively drive forward volunteering to enhance learning across our individual colleges. Develop a culture of volunteering which articulates with citizenship, employability, retention and CfE. Project would ensure national as well as local college outcomes and share developments, information and learning. One of the specific aims was to develop appropriate formal and informal recognition for volunteering and the learning gained from undertaking volunteering activities in association with SQA. SCQF and specific third sector awards i.e Millennium Volunteer Awards.

    4. Scotland Colleges Volunteering Award Award was designed to recognise the learning by volunteering that students have experienced. Entrants were asked to demonstrate how their volunteering has supported their own personal development and contributed to the wider community. Over 20 colleges taking part. Judges came from VDS, SCVO and an independent consultant. Winners have been announced and award presentation will take place on the 28th September 2011 at the Learning by Volunteering – Promoting Excellence Event. More details can be found at www.scotlandcolleges.ac.uk

    5. SQA Awards in Volunteering Skills QDT was headed up by Angus College and made up of a number of colleges and LbV co-ordinators. Recognised gap in current provision, we have aimed to create an award that is accessible and has no age or subject restriction and fits into college curriculum and delivered in the community. Offer an alternative to the English based ASDAN award which can be costly and SQA is more widely recognised by Scottish Employers. Wider consultation was carried out during winter 2010 and support was very high with, 34 VIO’s provided input.

    6. SQA Award overview Made up of 3 units, avaliable at level 3,4, and 5 on SCQF framework. Units are – Preparing to Volunteer, Volunteering Experience and Volunteering Investigation Project. All units are equal to 1 credit. Can be delivered to those already volunteering, or not. Can be delivered in any SQA approved centre and good partnership work with colleges can enhance delivery and assessment Validation still take place, 17th June 2011 with launch of the award taking place at the LbV event in September.

    9. Learning by Volunteering SCQF level 4 This unit is open to all students that are committed to developing their learning through a volunteering opportunity. The unit is divided into two outcomes:
