  2. Program Purpose • A didactic course designed to provide nurses with the knowledge base needed to safely care for children and adolescents receiving chemotherapy for non-cancer diseases Introduction

  3. Program Objectives • To establish education and practice standards for the administration of chemotherapy and biotherapy to children and adolescents • To promote consistent practices in the administration of chemotherapy and biotherapy to pediatric and adolescent patients Introduction

  4. Standard of Practice • Chemotherapy and biotherapy administered to children and adolescents should be provided by registered nurses who have completed the APHON Pediatric Chemotherapy and Biotherapy for Non-Cancer Diseases Course Introduction

Course Objectives • At the completion of this course the participant will be able to: • identify principles of chemotherapy and biotherapy • describe safe handling measures • recognize toxicities of common chemotherapy and biotherapy agents and nursing interventions to manage symptoms • outline steps required to safely administer chemotherapy agents to children and adolescents • discuss specific disease processes and treatment that require chemotherapy/biotherapy as a medical intervention. Standard of Education • Safe and consistent administration of chemotherapy and biotherapy to children and adolescents requires specific knowledge and specialized skills • The Pediatric Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Course for Non-Cancer Diseases offers the specific knowledge required through a didactic course and a written exam • A clinical practicum by the employer of the nurse is recommended to validate the clinical skills used in the administration of chemotherapy and biotherapy Introduction

  9. Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Competency • Following course attendance and successful completion of a written exam, participants will then follow institutional protocol for hands-on competency in administration of chemotherapy/biotherapy to the non-cancer patient Introduction

  10. Clinical Competence • Clinical competency is assessed through orientation, observation, supervision of administration of chemotherapy either in a laboratory setting or to patients Introduction
