  3. SOUTH INDIA’S MOST UNIQUE FESTIVALS People in South India have very ritualistic lifestyle. South Indians are famous for their dedication for their religion, tradition, and culture. Therefore, festivals of South India are famous all over the world. Colorful performing arts of Kerala like Kathakali, Kalaripayattu, Koodiyattom, Thullal and many dance forms is a blessing to Kerala tourism. Some of the well-known festivals of South India : 1. PONGAL (TAMIL NADU) Pongal is celebrated for four days in the month of January, mostly between January 13th to 16th. It is one of the most important festivals celebrated by the people Tamil Nadu in India. It corresponds the festival Makar Sankranti, the winter Harvest festival celebrated all over India. 2. ONAM (KERALA) Onam is the festival celebrated with the most number of cultural elements. It is Kerala’s harvest festival and also the festival of Rain Flowers. Onam’s song states many of the modern social indicators of Welfare State.

  4. 3. NATYANJALI DANCE FESTIVAL (TAMIL NADU) It is a classical Indian dance festival. It is a composition in bharatanatyam. This festival continues for more than a week and dancers of all styles have been offering their art at the feet of Lord Nataraja. 4. HAMPI FESTIVAL (KARNATAKA) Hampi is celebrated with shows of music, puppet dance, fireworks and grand finale showing the cultural richness of the place. It is scheduled for 3 days during the first week of November. It is celebrated with lots of pomp procession. 5. NEHRU TROPHY BOAT RACE (KERALA) This water carnival is the biggest snake boat race in the world. It is celebrated every year on the second Saturday of August. Jawaharlal Nehru, the prime minister of India visited Kerala in 1952, and having gone through the tremendous excitement of sailing in a snake-boat, he donated a rolling trophy to the winner of the race and then the tradition started.
