  1. Then and Now An interactive journey through primary sources by Alyssa Wilburn

  2. Introduction I currently am teaching Language Arts and Social Studies to fifth graders in Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania, which is located about 30 minutes south of the Poconos. Within our Social Studies curriculum, we spend a great deal of time teaching about the early colonization of America. As part of our studies, we take a field trip to a town very close-by called Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Bethlehem is rich in history. But, upon our first field trip to Bethlehem with our fifth graders, it became glaringly apparent that many of them were unaware of this historical gem lying just outside of their town. I have created this presentation to use with my fifth graders as a background building activity to be used prior to our field trip in Bethlehem. This activity will be used as a learning center where students can independently work and interact with the collection of primary sources I have found throughout my research. Enjoy! Alyssa

  3. Bethlehem: Then and Now Directions: Below, you will find two links. One, is an illustration of Bethlehem as it was in 1877. The other, is a photograph of Bethlehem in 2011. Using the graphic organizer, add text to the Venn Diagram to reflect the similarities and differences you notice (Minimum of 3 per section). Bethlehem in 1877 Bethlehem in 2011

  4. Can You Find the Moravian Star? Every August, Bethlehem hosts Musikfest, a week long celebration of music of all types! 7. Haydn's The Creation Put on your headphones! For this activity, you will listen to an audio clip of Haydn’s The Creation. This song was first performed in the United States at the Central Moravian Church of Bethlehem in 1811! After listening, complete the Sound Recording Analysis Sheet.

  8. Click on the image below. The document is part of a memoir of Mr. James Burnside, who was a very important community member of Bethlehem in the early 1700s.
