  3. Comparative In-Class Essay Exam Prompt: “What are the connections between the condition of factory workers during industrialization, 1880-1900 and modern times (as shown in Made in LA)?”

  4. Comparative Essay Guiding Questions: Remember to be specific, using examples from your notes and the book: • What were working conditions like during industrialization? • What are working conditions like in the garment industry today? • What did workers do in order to push for better working condition then and now? • What did the government do to regulate business and help workers during industrialization? • What was the response of journalists like Upton Sinclair and middle class reformers to the problems of industrialization and the growth of cities?

  6. Agenda • Document skill: making inferences pp.39-40 of “The New Nation” packet. (15-20 minutes) • Planning an Free Response Question (FRQ), pp.36-38 of “The New Nation” packet (20-30 minutes). • Exit ticket and homework (5 minutes)

Document Skill: Making Inferences (15-20 minutes) • Turn to page 39 in your “The New Nation” packet and read the instructions and example text with inferences. • Applying the skill, p.40: Read the excerpt about the Alien and Sedition Acts from The Life of Timothy Pickering, 1783. • Write down the inferences that you can draw from the text (what is implied but not directly stated).

Essay Skill: Which FRQ Question to Write About, pp.36-38 • On the AP exam you will have the DBQ (which we have been practicing each week) and another short essay called a Free Response Question (or FRQ). • You will always have two choices of which FRQ to write about. • This activity will help you make a quick and informed decision on which question to write on.

  9. Essay Skill: Which FRQ to Write About, pp.36-38 (20-30 minutes) • Read the introduction and example on page 36-37. (5 minutes) • Applying the skill: Read “Part A” with the following two prompts: • 1. “The most glaring weakness of the Constitution was its failure to protect individual rights.” • 2. “American foreign policy under George Washington was a defensive reaction to events and threats from abroad.” • Use Give Me Liberty! Ch.7 to come up with a list of things you would include if you were to write on each choice: Essay 1 – List | Essay 2 – List. • Decide which one you would write and why.

  10. Exit Ticket and Homework • 1. What is the difference between a DBQ and an FRQ? • 2. What should you do before you write an FRQ? • HOMEWORK: • Finish reading and taking notes on Ch.6 “The Revolution Within” for Tuesday’s reading test. • Have a great weekend!
