  1. What is Canola? • Canola is not rapeseed. • Canola was developed from rapeseed by Canadian plant breeders for its nutritional qualities. • The term Canola is the combination of two words - Canadian and oil. • Canola oil is produced by crushing canola.

  2. The Canola Plant • The canola plant grows anywhere from 1m (3 feet) to 2m (6 feet) tall produces yellow flowers which, in turn, produce seed pods. The seed pods are about one-fifth the size of pea pods and contain about twenty tiny round black or brownish seeds.

  3. Made from Canola • In Canada, 88% of salad oils, 71% of shortening oils and 53% of margarine oils are made from canola.Statistics Canada

  4. The Canola Seed • Each canola seed is approximately 40 plus percent oil. The seeds are crushed to obtain canola oil for human consumption and the remainder is processed into canola meal which is used as a high protein livestock and poultry feed.
