Biographical Information • Marie Antoinette was born an Austrian princess on November 2, 1755 as the 7th daughter of Maria Teresa, after her birth many celebrated because they knew she would marry a European prince. • As the youngest daughter of Maria Teresa rose on the schonbrunn palace, Marie Antoinette was often neglected due to her mother showing more favor to her older sisters.

Biographical Information Cont. • When Marie Antoinette turned 14 she married King Louis XVI • Marie Antoinette did not fulfill or complete her marriage for about 7 years. • Since Marie Antoinette was so young when she became queen her only real job was to produce children. Her political power was concentrated on her reproductive power.

  4. Biographical Information Cont. • She bore 2 sons named Louis Joseph and Louis Charles • She was arrested by the revolutionaries in 1792 • She was killed by the guillotined in Paris on October 16, 1793

People’s Views on Marie Antoinette • The queen was never popular to begin with in France, due to her not originating from France. • The people of the third estate hated Marie Antoinette because of her lavish lifestyle. • The country was also in deep debt and this made French citizens even angrier due to how she was living.

People’s Views on Marie Antoinette Cont. • Marie Antoinette was known as a emblem financial irresponsibility and a personification of a moral corruption. • Marie Antoinette due to poor ruling became the symbol of foreign influence of millions of French citizens. • Marie Antoinette also became the symbol of a failed and hated monarchy.

Lifestyle of the King and Queen v.s the Third Estate • Marie Antoinette lived a lavish lifestyle with many servants • Some Members of the third estate may not have proper shelter while the King and Queen are living in the huge Versailles estate. • The third estate made up about 98 percent of the population and the 1st and 2nd estate made up 2 percent but the 1st and 2nd estates can still overthrow the 3rd estate.

  8. Lifestyle of the King and Queen vs. the Third Estate (cont.) • The first estate did not have to pay taxes or work. They also owned 10% of France’s land. • The third estate had to work and pay taxes.
