  3. OUM Exam Questions • What are the TWO main purposes of fast reading ? • Explain briefly how would you apply the two methods of fast reading. • Please refer to the attached question papers for more questions.

  4. Reading Academically • What do you read? • Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested. Francis Bacon, 1625. • What do you understand by this quote? • Well, the purpose of reading differs from one individual to the other.

  5. Why do we read? • To get an overview (background reading) • To locate specific information • To develop detailed and analytical understanding • Pleasure reading/free-range reading.

  6. How do we read? • Fast reading • Scanning (very quick absorption of the content) • Skimming (running eyes down very quickly over the main features)

  7. Slow Reading • Why? • Analyze and understand information • Evaluate and be critical • Remember the information you read • Follow instructions

  8. What is SQ3R • Survey • Question • Read • Recite • Review • Read page 89, Table 3.2

  9. How to Read the Module • Title of the book, essay or article • Author • Place/year of publication • Subject • Main points, comments, important information • Related works
