Causes of WWI. Do Now: Page 115. Think about a fight you were in with a friend, sibling, team mate, classmate, etc. Describe the fight and what CAUSED it? Was it a couple of little things that bugged you? Was it one BIG thing that made you really mad? Was it a little bit of both?

Do Now: Page 115 • Think about a fight you were in with a friend, sibling, team mate, classmate, etc. • Describe the fight and what CAUSED it? • Was it a couple of little things that bugged you? • Was it one BIG thing that made you really mad? • Was it a little bit of both? • Write 5-7 sentences

  4. There were many causes to WWI in Europe Objective: “I can identify the causes of World War I and describe which cause had the strongest impact on the outbreak of war.”

  5. Take notes on page 115 (right) • Take notes on all these causes • Rate each cause on a scale from 1-10 • 1= little cause for war • 10= extreme cause for war

Europe claiming parts of Africa Imperialism • Imperialism (extending a country’s power and force in other areas) • European countries are fighting for colonies in Africa, Asia, for more land, power, resources ($) • Germany in conflict with Britain & France for land in Africa • Germany in competition economically with Britain

We want independence Nationalism We are so great, we should expand and take over • An extreme loyalty to one’s nation • desire of subject people to be independent -ie: Countries in the Balkans want independent status from Austria-Hungary -Many regions torn by tensions of nationalist/ethnic groups 2) desire of independent nations for dominance among others -ie: Germany wants to expand and be most powerful -Competition & tension

  8. Austria-Hungary was was a vast empire that covered most of central and Eastern Europe. It contained over 40 million people made up of 11 different nationalities.

  9. Nationalism in Europe in 1914 Austria-Hungary tries to dominate Serbia Balkan States want independence and for Austria-Hungary to stay out Ottoman Empire weakening (lost Balkan states)

Well, our troops are stronger and guns are larger Militarism • To build a strong military to defend or promote national interests. • “arms race” • more Weapons/technology + troops/men + longer service time = More power • Germany builds up military by 73% • Others build up military to compete And we are not afraid to use them!

  13. Alliances • A pact between countries to help and back each other up in the event of war. Loyalty to others • Alliances are Meant to prevent war, but ends up causing it! • 2 Sides: • Central Powers: Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy, Turkey • Triple Entente: France, Britain, Russia

Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand (June 1914) • Serbians are upset that Austria-Hungary takes Bosnia through Imperialism • A Serbian Nationalist shoots Franz and wife during a trip to Bosnia • Austria-Hungary blames Serbia and goes to war. Germany backs up A-H • Russia and the Triple Entente backs up Serbia
