  2. Wooden Boats – School basics • The WoodenBoat School is located in Brooklin, Maine (about a 5-hour drive north of Boston). • Took a Traditional Woodstrip Kayak Construction class for a week in 2006. • There were 10 people in the class, including one person from Austin. • Ted Moores taught the class. • KayakCraft book very helpful.

  3. Wooden Boats – School, why? • My family initially helped get me into woodworking – book case, checkers set, wine rack, etc. • Took the class because I like how wooden boats are both beautiful and functional.

  27. Wooden Boats – quick bad joke • Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were getting cold so they decided to light a fire in their boat. It promptly sank…

  28. Wooden Boats – quick bad joke • …proving once again that you can’t have your kayak and heat it too.

  29. Wooden Boats – Build • In 2008-2009 decided to build a kayak for my friend Steve and his wife. • Used stitch-and-glue method, which I figured out as I went (real simple!). • It took me one year to build, 10-5 on Saturdays only.

  42. Wooden Boats – Virtual-Build • Took plans from a simple sailboat design and virtually built it in Google Sketchup 2017. • The plans came from the WoodenBoat shop and are of a Nutshell Pram. • I broke the process into four phases – (1) Hull beginning, (2) Hull finishing, (3) Sail integration, and (4) Finishing. • Named her Grace and was sure to add a Texas flag!
