  3. Partner Share • What are some ways that people promote freedom? • What movies, TV shows, or books have you seen or read that are about someone who chooses to do the right thing, even though it is dangerous?

  4. Let’s Talk About • Turn to page 288-289 • What are the children doing? • Voting is an important way of promoting freedom. • What is the elderly man wearing on his uniform? • He probably fought bravely in a battle.

  5. Let’s Talk About • Who is sitting at the desk? • What is President Bush doing? Signing a bill. Making laws to help people is another way to promote freedom. One must be very informed to make laws. • How can people promote freedom?

  6. Listen: Molly Pitcher is about a brave woman during a battle in the Revolutionary War. Listen for: • Battlefield • Freedom • Beloved • battle

  7. Amazing Words • battlefield- the location of a battle during a war • The battlefield was covered in smoke from the cannons. • Freedom- is the power to do, say, or think as you please • My great grandfather came to the United States to enjoy the freedom of a democratic society.

  8. Amazing Words • Beloved- something that is beloved is dearly loved or very close to someone • The new puppy quickly became a beloved pet. • Battle- a fight between opposing armies, air forces or navies • The general won the battle but had not yet won the war.

  9. Author’s Purpose • To persuade • To inform • To entertain • Or to express feelings

  10. Before the Midnight Ride • The author’s purpose is the reason the author has for writing the story. • What can you guess is the author’s purpose before reading the story? • We are going to read about Paul Revere’s life. • Let’s read the story together.

  11. Vocabulary • Fate- destiny • His fate was decided at birth. • Fearless- bold • He acted fearless in front of the girls.

  12. Vocabulary • Glimmer- dim light • We read in the glimmer of light. • Lingers-stays • The smell of smoke lingers long after the cigar was put out.

  13. Vocabulary • Magnified-made to look larger • He magnified the ant to look at it. • Somber-gloomy • He stared with a somber look after they lost the game.

  14. Vocabulary • Steed- high spirited horse • He rode proudly on his steed.

  15. Spelling -final syllables er, ar, or • Let’s take our pretest now.

  16. Subject-Verb Agreement • A comet shoot/shoots across the sky. • Nine planets moves/move around the sun. • There is/are nine planets in the solar system. • As meteors burns/burn they create a streak of light.

  17. Writing • Historical Fiction: • A story that takes place in a real time in history • It often includes real historical people and events • Uses details to describe the past and make them story seem real
