  1. A single shard

  2. Author • Linda Sue Park was born in Urbana, Illinois on March 25, 1960, and grew up outside Chicago. The daughter of Korean immigrants, she has been writing poems and stories since she was four years old, and her favorite thing to do as a child was read.

  3. Back Ground Of The Story • The story takes place in different towns in Korea. It takes places in Chulpo where Min and Tree-Ear lived and the Rock of the Falling Flowers in puyo and at the king? court by the sea in Song-Do. The time period of the story is in the 12th century.

  4. Summary Of The Story • In the beginning of the story, Tree-Ear followed a trail of rice to Min house. When Tree-Ear found out that Min was a potter and Tree-Ear started spying on him because he always wanted to be a potter. Then one day while Min was out and he went into Min house to look at his new work. When he picked up one of Min pots to rook at it and he dropped it and broke it. So he had to work for Min to pay for the damage he had done. After Tree-Ear worked long enough to pay for all the damages and he convinced Min to let him work for him.

  5. Conflict • One day when Tree-Ear went to Min houseand he heard that the king emissary was going to choose potters for the commission. So Min worked hard to make the best pottery ever. He wanted the king to choose his pottery but the king couldn choose between Min and Kang so he asked them to make 2 more pots. When Min was finished, Tree-Ear was asked to take them to the king. On the way to the king? court in Song-Do and the pots were stolen while Tree-Ear was on the Rock of the Falling Flowers in Puyo. The only thing left was a shard from one of Min work. Tree-Ear decided to take the single shard to the king even though that was only a small piece.

  6. Climax The king liked Min’s work so much that Min made it in the commission by the shard. When Tree-Ear arrived in Chulpo he went to Min house. Min was sad and soon Tree-Ear was sad too because Crane-man had died. Crane-Man was Tree-Ear best friend and guide, but Min decided to adopt Tree-Ear and gave him a new name Hyun-Pil.

  7. Character 1 • Tree-ear: He is a main Character of the A Single Shard book and he is an orphan. He want to be a potter. • Min: He was a vest potter in 12century in Korea and latter he became a Tree-ear’s father. • Crane-man: He is a best friend of Tree-ear and also he was adoptive parents before Min.

  8. Character 2 • I really want to meet Crane-man because he is very wise man and he know lots of Korean old saying.

  9. Ending • After Crane-Man die Hyun-pil and Min go to journey for learn making pottery but before they go journey Hyun-pil put single shard from the Min’s vest pottery on the Crane-Man’s tomp.

  10. Moral Teaching • The moral teaching of this book is to accomplish your dream. Tree-Ear dream was to be a famous potter one day and at the end he really became one. Tree-Ear always worked hard to accomplish his goal. On his journey to Song-Do Tree-Ear also learned that he shouldn give up even though he faced problems. I learned that you should always hold on to your dream and never give up no matter what and someday it will come true.
