  3. About the IB Program at Washington-Lee high school The IB Program at Washington-Lee High School encourages students to be active learners, well-rounded individuals and engaged world citizens.

Results for 2010-2011 • 81% diploma pass rate in 2011 (35 of 43) • 4.89 average grade obtained by candidates who passed the diploma (4.89 out of 7) • 31 average points obtained by candidates who passed the diploma (31 out of 45) • 364 students took 737 exams in 30 subject areas • 72% students tested scored a 4 or better (4 out of 7)

  7. Profile for 2011-2012 • 59 diploma seniors (12th) • 51 anticipated juniors (11th) • 541 students enrolled in one or more IB classes (11th-12th) • 204 W-L Pre-IB students (9th and 10th) • 313 IB transfers (9th-12th)

What is so special about IB? • World-wide recognition. • The curriculum and pedagogy of IB programs focus on international perspectives of learning and teaching, while insisting that students fully explore their home culture and language. • Students are assessed both internally and externally in ways that measure individual performance against stated objectives for each subject. • Ongoing professional development for teachers.

  12. Option 1: Full Diploma • Application required: Students apply in November and December of 10th grade • A two-year course of study • Starts in the Junior year • Focuses on international mindedness • Core requirements

  13. CONTENTS: WHAT DOES THE IB DIPLOMA PROGRAM CURRICULUM CONTAIN? The curriculum contains six subject groups and a core of three parts • Students study concurrently: • three subjects at the high level (240 hours each) • three subjects at the standard level (150 hours each) • all three parts of the core • The IB Learner Profile and the core are central to the philosophy of the Diploma Program.

  24. DIPLOMA PROGRAM COURSES“CERTIFICATE STUDENTS” • No application required. • Meet minimum course prerequisites and receive teacher recommendation. • Take one or more IB courses out of the six groups of study as part of their high school program. • Complete internal and external assessments.

  27. Prerequisites for W-L Pre-IB • Strong grades (A’s and B’s) in all subjects. • Spanish, French, Arabic or Chinese II or Latin I in grade 8. • Algebra I or greater in grade 8. • Strong grades (A’s and B’s) in English and History. • Short answer/essay questions.

  32. The IB Transfer Process • Application Deadline – January 20, 2012 (4PM) • At least one parent or guardian must attend two high school information sessions. A transfer application must be signed by the principal at the end of each meeting. • W-L is only accepting IB transfers. If the number of qualified program transfers exceeds 83 a random double-blind lottery will be conducted by the Superintendent’s office. • Transfers that do not pursue the full diploma must take three IB courses Junior and Senior year. All IB transfers are also required to take AP Government in 10th grade. • Bus transportation is provided for IB transfers that live at least 1.5 miles away.
