  5. Who was Henri Matisse? • French • Born in 1869 (on New Year’s Eve) • Died in 1954 • Leader of the Fauvists • Friend of Pablo Picasso • Admired Paul Cezanne • Believed that color had a therapeutic power • Sick as a young man • Had cancer as an old man and was confined to a wheelchair

  7. Overcoming Challenges • Frederic Church • Enormously successful as an artist • Stricken with rheumatoid arthritis which greatly reduced his ability to paint. • Eventually painted with his left hand and continued to produce his work on a much slower pace.

  8. Overcoming Challenges • Chuck Close • A spinal artery collapse in 1988 left him severely paralyzed • He has continued to paint and produce work that remains sought after by museums and collectors.
