  1. California Water Negotiation By: Dana Bonilla and Adrian Gonzalez

  2. Issues The main problems of the water negotiation are: • Farmers aren’t able to use their land to the fullest extent. • The environmentalists jobs are affected because the Delta Smelt (type of fish) is being affected by the scarcity of water and are going extinct. • The workers are losing their jobs because their rights are neglected.

  3. Farmers Arguments • Environmentalists are threatening the farmers with the Delta Smelt issue. • Delta Smelt only live up to a year. However, they are being affected by the water stress levels.

  4. Farmers Arguments • If farmers are being cut on water usage then crops die out and prices for farmer products go up affecting the economy in a negative way. • Farmers also can’t compete with industrial farms that have access to huge water supplies and lose their farms.

  5. Environmentalists Arguments • Delta Smelt are going extinct because farmers are using up way to much water. • Also farmers are hurting the environment around them by taking the water and contaminating it with pesticides.

  6. Environmentalists Arguments • By taking water from the local watershed farming has impacted salmon populations and changed the entire topography. • Environmentalist scientists believe that the CVP has had terrible solutions for these issues.

  7. Workers Arguments • Works are losing their jobs because farmers can’t farm if they don’t have any water to grow crops. • Their rights are being neglected.

  8. Workers Arguments • For instance, environmentalists care more about the Delta Smelt fish than the local farm workers. • Chemicals have made the water undrinkable .

  9. Solution(s) • Farmers can buy land in other states. • The Delta Smelt should be relocated to other environments where they can thrive with out issues. • With water supplies being available again to farmers, they can get their farms running again and workers will be needed. Thus restoring jobs again to those that lost it. • Also environmentalists can relocate other animals that are being affected by this until they come up with a solution to keep them in their natural habitat.
