  3. Activities • National Consultations ( ABS workshops) The 2 main workshops for ABS were organized for capacity assessment amongst NGO’s and government ministries.

  4. Traditional Knowledge and Biodiversity This workshop was done in collaboration with Ministry of I Taukei Affairs. Main purpose of the workshop was to look at the linkages on biodiversity and TK

NBSAP Review 2010 andLaunching of NBSAP Implementation Framework 2010-2014a major achievement The two day consultation workshop at Novotel on the 23 – 24th February - where the celebrated the NBSAP 2010 achievements and a review was undertaken to plan action strategies for 2011 from the IF. The intention is that the NBSAP Implementation Framework is a living document and changeable to embrace the biodiversity conservation needs of Fiji, and to enable us to respond to the 2020 CBD targets

  8. Implementation Framework 201-2014 launch Implementation framework was launched at IUCN conference room by the Permanent secretary for Ministry of Fisheries and Forests. NBSAP add on Project provided both support in terms of funding for this activity as well coordinating key events for this two day workshop for the Department. L-R : IUCN Director delivering his address at the launch, PS Fisheries and Forests at the launching of the NBSAP IF and Department staff with the national Coordinator NBSAP at the launch.

  9. International year of Biodiversity Campaign United Nations declared 2010 to be the International Year of Biodiversity (IYOB). Fiji’s IYOB celebration was launched by the Honorable Minister of Local Government, Urban Development, and Housing & Environment Mr. Samuela Saumatua. Focusing on the theme “Protect Island Biodiversity-it’s our life” TV advertisements , designing of an IYOB CD, float during the Annual Hibiscus Festival , from t-shirts, caps, sarongs, environment friendly bags, crafty and painted banners, posters and a cleverly thought out float with the theme “Promoting International Year of Biodiversity” – Biodiversity is life. Biodiversity is our life.

  10. Closing Celebration of the IYOB: The celebration of the successful IYOB was held at Tanoa Hotel on the 19th of May 2011 to mark and reflect on the achievements and outcomes that were generated during the IYOB. The Honorable Minister for Local Government, Urban Development, and Housing & Environment Colonel Samuela Saumatua was the Chief Guest who officially closed the IYOB campaign for Fiji.

  12. COP 10 - Japan NBSAP project provided communication support, financial assistance (for communication) and secretarial support for Fiji’s participation at the meeting in Nagoya Japan. The meeting was attended by Ms. Eleni Tokaduadua from Department of Environment with some NGO representatives to form the Fiji delegation.

  13. Post Cop meeting in Nadi In May 2011, a planning meeting for implementation of Nagoya outcomes referred to as the post COP meeting was also held in Tanoa Hotel. Both the meeting was attended by project staff- the first meeting (pre COP) was attended by Ms. Tokaduadua while the post COP was attended by Ms. Tokaduadua and Mr. Rahul Chand- the National Coordinator for NBSAP

Project Management Two Project Officers Coordinator – Rahul Chand Project Assistant- Miriama Kolinisau Total GEF approved fund for the Project = US$237,500 (as per project document) Total of Advance of 2010 (Q3+Q4) = FJ$29,117 (only 1 adv in 2010 - Aug 2010 adv) Total RDPs for 2010 (Q3+Q4) = FJ$23,899.71 (as per CDR attached) Advance of 2011 = FJ$79,540 (Feb 2011) RDP’s total for 2011= FJ$4,479.40 (as per CDR attached) Total amount disbursed to the project till date: FJD $137,036.11

  15. Major Achievements ABS – (a)National Consultation Report on ABS Capacity Building with (1) Government (2) Non-Government organization.(b) Printed awareness materials such as the ABS toolkit produced by CBD was reproduced and distributed to stakeholders. (c)  Media was used to raise awareness on ABS in Fiji. Traditional Knowledge and biodiversity: National consultation Report with specific resolutions on ABS issues Traditional knowledge and inter linkages with biodiversity. CHM: Roadmap drawn for CHM in Fiji for environment. Also have a draft ABS Policy guidelines framework.

  16. Challengers and Problems • UNDP project funding guidelines • Such as acquittals quarterly, 80% implementation rate, 100% acquittals in 6 months etc. • Delays in accessing funds when it first arrives
