  1. Update/Progress made by key stakeholders coordinating the pineapple sub sector research and value chain development • Several research and development projects/programs are ongoing in the pineapple subsector. • Objective- Support productivity, strengthen value chains, improve market access, support product dev’t. • Aim- Improve incomes and livelihoods of agricultural stakeholders.

  2. Update/Progress made by key stakeholders • Generated expected output benefits to the key target stakeholder??? • As platform-common ground for possible collaboration • Stakeholders of the platform-learn and benefit

  3. Update/Progress made by key stakeholders Projects (4): • Makerere University: Productivity and Growth in Organic Value Chains (ProGroV) • Mukono Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MUZARDI) of NARO: Participatory Market Chain Approach (PMCA) Uganda

  4. Update/Progress made by key stakeholders • Makerere University: Innovation Systems and Clusters Program Uganda (ISCPU). • Uganda Industrial Research Institute (UIRI): The lead agency for industrialization in Uganda

  5. (ProGroV)- Strengthen research based knowledge for increased productivity in organic prod. & value chains Research Projects at MAK • Innovations for improved milk production among smallholder organic pineapple farmers using pineapple wastes as feed supplements •  Developing Ecological pest management approaches for pineapple mealy bugs in Uganda

  6. Understanding organic consumer characteristics in the metropolis of Kampala, Uganda • Update: • Work is going on in Kampala metropolis, Kayunga and Luweero on mealy bugs, converting pineapple residues into livestock feeds but we have not yet analysed the data.

  7. (PMCA)- Improving pineapple market chains through stakeholder participation approach. • Challenges in pineapple marketing • Marketing opportunities- 1.Production and sale of disease free planting materials 2. Pulp processing for local market

  8. Update: • Delayed release of funds from G.O.U and the World Bank for phase 2. • (ISCPU)- Uganda’s firms and farms more competitive locally and globally, through innovations and cluster initiatives. • Clusters are groups of independent firms, collaborating while competinggeographically concentrated in one areaspecialised in a particular fieldlinked by similar technologies or skills

  9. Pineapple processing Cluster Initiative in Kayunga located in Central Uganda • Update: Working with CEDAT, and CTDD • 7 Mechanical eng. Students- 8 cluster initiatives • Produce Prototype machines • Study to improve production and value addition • Hybrid drier

  10. Outputs/Benefits- • Hybrid drier • Slicing machine • Juice extractor

  11. Hybrid Drier

  12. Hybrid drier

  13. Slicing machine

  14. Juice Extractor

  15. Advantages • Hybrid drier • Use forced air convection • Less drying time • Easy to load and off load. • Slicing machine • Reduced slicing time • Improved hygiene (Minimal handling of pineapple • Improved accuracy

  16. (UIRI)- Development technology centre, Production system (business incubation, Packaging system pilot production plant) and Product development-Technology and innovation related to agriculture value addition. • Applied research for new products and processes corresponding to industry needs.

  17. Update- Lack of organised primary agricultural chain systems (Supply Chain Development) • Derekorp, in partnership with Technoserve-value chain model • Constrained by lack of funds
